Do we really need another Q&A? 235

The verdict is in on last night’s launch of Channel Nine’s panel discussion show, and it’s not pretty.

Racism, bullying and offensive comments aside, the major problem was that you couldn’t hear a thing anyone said. Unless they managed to shout louder than the rest of the panel – who were all already shouting.

The Verdict is allegedly based on the ABC’s Q&A, and Channel 10’s The Project, but aside from the presence of a table and a bunch of people with opinions, the similarities ends there.

If the show is to proceed, which Nine bosses have implied it will, host Karl Stefanovic needs to learn to control the panel. The shout-fest was impenetrable, with the hist forced to cry pleadingly, “It doesn’t work if we all talk over each other”. With this format, commercials are a blessing as it presumably gives producers a chance to rush in and shut the panel up ready for the next segment.

The media – both traditional and social – has plenty of withering comments to say about the show, and someone actually started a petition on asking the network to remove Mark Latham and replace him with “pretty much anyone”.

The Age described host Stefanovic as “TV’s premier journalist/vaudevillian” and made it clear that The Verdict is no commercial version of Q&A:

The Verdict is like Q&A in the same way a goldfish is like a labradoodle. You can keep both as pets but only one is going to pee on your carpet.

Comments from Twitter included that the show was “Q&A for bogans”.

Most comments focused on the offensive nature of Mark Latham comments, which included Western Sydney being a hotbed of terrorism because of all the Muslims sitting around with nothing to do.

He later went on to say the government was spending too much money on mental health, which he called “worrying too much” and that doctors were handing out anti-depressants like lollies.

Other highlights of the show were Jaquie Lambie opening up about receiving death threats over her comments about Muslims… but you couldn’t really hear what she had to say.

Did you catch The Verdict? Do you think we need a commercial version of Q&A

  1. Didn’t watch it. Sounds like I made the right decision. If what is stated in this article is true than everyone involved should be ashamed. Not the way for so called prominent people to behave.

  2. I didn’t watch it but I have read some very bad reviews this morning about shouting and racist rants, the show is not moderated correctly and it had some big ego’s on that panel. I am sticking with the ABC and they have no adds

    • Abbott complained about Q&A Victoria he would love this show with all it’s bigoted presenters and comments. I think decent Australian’s will turn it off, it will appeal to bogans

    • Pieter Strik I vote ALP and I can tell you Latham has lost the plot and he is not known for his humour, quite the contrary he is well known for his outrageous opinions and his rants. Victoria is right in , Trump is a fool and anyone would even think of voting for him has too few brain cells

    • So I take it by what I have read in your comments so far you would rather have a controlled left sided view than different views from different points of view. I would rather hear all sides and make up my own mind and I do have a mind .

      • By all means listen to disorderly bogan icons ranting, moderated by a vaudevillian journalist. Only thing I’ll be watching is the Twitter feeds later for a giggle! Otherwise it was rubbishy.

    • Pieter Strik I don’t think it was tongue in cheek ….. Latham has lost the plot ! And you Heather, if you enjoyed that show there is something wrong with you. It was poorly run, Karl had no control, a very poor presentation. I too like to hear all sides and make up my mind, however, this show was just a yelling match.

    • Latham has never had a sense of humour and wouldn’t understand what “tongue in cheek” means. If he says something, he’s serious., Serious in his mind, not in ours. The man’s a buffoon and should fade away into obscurity. What on earth was Channel 9 doing using him? Do they actually pay him?

    • Hold up there people I did not say I liked the show I only watched it out of curiosity otherwise one cannot comment, yes it was not controlled by Karl but I said it was good to hear different views as opposed to the abc and no there is nothing wrong with me I like to make my OWN judgements.

    • Watched it out of curiousity..take the female author, Mark Latham and the footballer out of the equation to get some decent debate, constructive comments and experienced feedback. Finally get someone to replace the inexperienced Karl and move the remainder of the panel to the abc panel and we are back to Q&A..then worth watching!! Epic Fail!!!

  3. First and last time watching it. Karl had no control and too many women who just wanted their opinion heard at all cost. the shouting and lack of respect was like watching a ship sinking

    • ps After I turned it off, I resorted to an old Betty Neels Book (you may all remember then) which I love, to calm me down

  4. Changed channel after about 15 minutes

    • You lasted longer than me Michael. Most of the 10 minutes I watched I couldn’t hear or understand what was being said as the panel were all trying to talk at once so who knows whether the content was good or bad. Maybe Karl needs to have lunch with Jenny Brockie and get a few tips.

  5. Turned it off, to many opinions shouting over each other for their 2minutes of fame, wont be watching it again..

  6. I watched most of it and yes while there was times where everybody tried to talk at once….but most of the time it was ok. Mark Latham was fine, he has his opinions and that is fine with me, I have my opinions too. Jaqui Lambie was ok, as were the others on the panel. I did not have a problem with anything that was said.

    • You seem to have it the wrong way round Q&A has informed experts and a host that can control the guests this show seemed to deliberately get guests known for there outrages statements which they got in good measure last night. You do realise Latham was. Labor politician.

    • Q&A controls , dictates to, and cuts off guests if they not suiting the answers they hope or want.
