Cyclists share our road with us but that doesn’t mean they share requirements of being on the road – they don’t pay registration, they don’t need a licence for it, and they don’t have to have compulsory insurance.

Now the NSW government is considering making all cyclists over 16 carry photo ID at all times, during a cycling safety meeting.

After two meetings, government representatives on the roundtable want to introduce a trial of laws that require motorists to keep a safe distance when overtaking cyclists.

But they’ll also need a little help as well from those who ride bikes, and a new policy that increases fines from $69 to the same amount motorists pay will aim to create harmony among road users, and fairness.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay said he has been “increasingly persuaded” by the idea of a licensing system for cyclists. Do you think we need that?

As Mr Gay himself wrote to the Member for Vaucluse, Gabrielle Upton, “there are no precedents for mandatory bicycle registration or cyclist licensing in Australia”, but perhaps after the second roundtable meeting with the NRMA, the Motor Accident Authority, cycling groups Bicycle Network, Bicycle NSW, the Amy Gillett Foundation, Cycling NSW, and the Pedestrian Council, we might see bigger changes to cycling laws that go outside NSW.

There’s been progress in QLD with the implementation of safe passing laws, which require motorists to give cyclists a metre of space when passing at speeds up to 60km/h, and 1.5 metres when passing at higher speeds, however nothing has yet been seriously considered when it comes to cyclists compliance with road laws and those penalties.

  1. How ignorent. Cyclists do not destroy the roadfs. They must however obey the rules. In almost every case of a Motor cycle or a bicycle accident it is the car driver who is at fault. Learn to drive. I have been driving for fifty six years and I challenge anybody to come to Eastern Creek Raceway with me if you think that you can drive. Bad driving causes accidents.

      • No, No, motorists have to pat for their licence, they have to pay for car registration, they have to pay for green slip insurance. Cyclists pay nothing.

        • if you actually look at car registration you will see that it goes stop consolidated revenue . the local council generally build roads. AND funnily most bike riders have a car or motor bike so pay rego. but fact is I ride my bike every day and even on designated areas on the road and constantly being cut off or having to brake quickly to avoid being under the car.
          I feel everyone should have id on them regardless. I believe the law says you should and also have some money on you., but here in Melbourne city area , most bike paths are off road and the council pays i.e. my rates. so you people who come into the city in cars get off my roads that I have paid for. end of argument

  3. The bike should have to be registered as well, just like a car has to be .You can be knocked over and hit your head on the ground and be seriously hurt or killed by a bike.I dont understand why they dont have to be registered for identification.

  4. All who use it pay for it, was told by one rider he does pay as he has a car, well then use it not the bike

    • I like bikes too but not with cars and trucks on the same pathway, you know who will come of second best every time regardless of who is at fault which a lot of the time is the bikes and expectimg trucks and buses to see them all the time is madness, most times they have trouble seeing cars and motor bikes

    • Yes. If you have a car and a motor bike and a trailer and a caravan they all have to be registered as they use public roads. I see cycles as no different. Use the public roads then pay for it and follow the rules.

  5. If they are 16 and over they should be riding on the road, licensed and with the necessary insurance, this would make them obey the road rules which the majority of them don’t do now, under no circumstances should they be allowed to ride on the footpaths

    • I totally agree with you Vivienne. I have to deal with arrogrant cyclists who use a very narrow, dangerously curving road, as if they own it, riding 3 and 4 abreast, not only is this dangerous but it is extremely frustrating for motorists, this is a 60 speed zone and has an unbroken white line for many k’s which means a car cannot overtake legally, so going uphill are we supposed to do 10k’s???

    • Yep, being liceneced and registered stops motor vehicle drivers from breaking the law………..

    • My grandkids are serious cyclists and my daughter always says if licences etc would keep them safe she’d be all for it but it guarantees NOTHING. You only have to read the vitriolic comments of a lot of motorists to see that.

    • No Karl footpaths are there for people ON FOOT hence the term foot path roads are for those who use ROADS if you use roads you pay our rego etc is meant for up keep of roads user pays mate

Bike riders are often healthier than those who have to drive everywhere, they don’t cost as much on Medicare , we should make our roads more bike friendly, encourage people out of their cars…have better public transport so you can train and ride, or bus and ride. Less pollution in our cities….a win for every one…. Making it more expensive by adding ID s or registrations etc…. Would send the wrong message.

    • no it wouldnt not , they use the road like everyone else , so rules should be no different , id is needed for EVERYTHING ELSE , so why exclude this . They should have to pass a road law test as well .

    • Except that many people and the people they care for, the car is their only mode of transport which is why they have disability identification displayed in their vehicle. I dare anyone to advise my husband to get on a bike or use public transport after suffering bladder cancer and having had radical surgery. Actually bike riders in the city should leave their bikes on the outskirts of the city and try walking on two legs within the city. That will mean less clutter of bikes on every street corner taking up prescious pedestrian walking space and ensure safety without bikeriders riding on footpaths.

    • the point that most miss is that MOST bike riders do have a drivers licence and a car, they pay rego, they have id, if they’re not driving their car then why can’t they still use the road?

    • I am not saying every one should be on bikes!! Of course some people have to use cars!! Motorists are being rip of by our governments, it is no raison to also rip bicycle riders of as well. Our system does not work…. Just adding more regeos and more regulations won’t necessary make the system fairer or more efficient…. We should look at countries where bicycles are a way of life and see how they do it….. I am very sure they did not do it by making it more expensive for bike riders!!

    • If got a drivers license should carry it and if break road rules should with loss of points on license

    • Cyclists arn’t healthy for long they’re breathing in carbons. Also bikes r ok for short trips. Not for t 20ks some ppl have to trAvel to work.

    • Phil Stevens, if you follow his logic, we should not have to pay rego and insurance for caravans & trailers, or motorcycles either. Your car insurance will not cover you for an accident on your bike!

    • I work in a public hospital and the number of cyclists who incur huge bills is mind boggling. The same as motor cyclists.
      Just because you ride a bike doesn’t mean you are healthier. There are other ways to stay physically active. Riding bikes on hard bitumen roads increases your chances of trauma.

    • theyare bloody nuicences on the road and think they look good in their skin tight crappy jeans or whatever ,

    • Not practical! Some are not capable of riding a bike and the reasons are many e.g. age, health, distance, suitable surface to ride upon. Those who are lucky enough to ride on the rides can help pay for the roads, let’s just be fair about it.
