Could we host another Olympics?

It’s the question being asked today, 15 years after we last hosted the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Even the International Olympic Committee want us to enter the athletics competition for the third time – IOC chief Thomas Bach believes if Australia wanted to host the Summer Olympics again, we would have a great chance of winning.

It may seem far away, but the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has been considering a prospective bid to host the 2028 Olympics in Brisbane.

Mr Bach met with Tony Abbott recently to discuss a future bid, considering the huge success of the Games in Melbourne (1956) and Sydney.

He told a news conference, “A bid from Australia would enjoy a lot of sympathy and would have a great chance of winning.

“This is for 2028 and it is a long way away and I told [Mr Abbott] I hoped Australia would face a tough competition to host the Games.

“Because this is what Australians enjoy, a great competition and then perhaps to win”.

The German president of the committee believes we have something to be proud of in our love for sport. He also commented on our ability to host again, saying that it would be fine as the 2000 Olympics would be 28 years ago if we were to win the 2028 Games.

“It would be 28 years after the Sydney Games, this is not too soon to come back to Australia and Oceania.

“The Games are rotating around the world but there is no established rotation by the years.

“It would be wise for the Australians to be candidates for the Olympic Games while there are people who are still alive to remember the great success of the Sydney Games”.

It’s coming around again and the 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro next year, then Tokyo in 2020. We do already have a worldwide sporting event lined up, with the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast.
