In breaking news out of Rio, nine athletes have been arrested by police in Rio following the basketball semi-final.

The athletes are from the Australian team and they are currently being questioned by police.

Australian Olympic Committee lawyer Fiona de Jong is with the athletes who were arrested for tampering tampering with their accreditation passes.

They were detained at the event, which is considered an offence in Brazil.

Australian team media boss Mike Tancred confirmed police were talking to nine Australian athletes over the matter.

“Some people tried to tamper with their accreditation,” Tancred said.

“They’ve got stopped by people over at the stadium.

“It’s really a matter for the IOC as they’re in charge of accreditations. If you tamper with accreditations it is their problem.

“We’re over there with the lawyer.”

As this is a breaking news story, SAS will update this article as it progresses.

Rio was hoping to boost tourist trade………like hell. Who would go there to be robbed and insulted.

    • Ranghora

Hell hole? Police deals with criminals the same way everywhere and Rio is no different…. Had it happened in Sydney, with the Brazilian athletes, how do you think the NSW Police would react? Taser gun?

Get them home, that place is a disgrace.

    • Ranghora

Yeah! you are right … Brazil should be more careful checking people’s background before allowing criminals into the country … Irish IOC president (now in jail in Rio); American athletes (copped heavy fines for lying and pretending and possibly lost their careers; couple of African rapists (in jail); now 10 Australians held at a police station for some ticketing / access issues …

The Australian athlete who claims to have been robbed of R$1000.00 during the night, in Copacabana, got lucky he is still alive … I bet that it was a deal gone wrong … see, not every Brazilian is a drug dealer, but a lot of young people love free money …. specially when it comes from a totally drunk ” client”. Who would walk alone by Copacabana Beach during the night? Drunk Australian tourist …. that’s who! Not even in Bondi or Manly one can do it …

Brazilian police should show the same efficiency when investigating similar crimes by local Brazilian criminals …

As for “back water” you should travel a bit more around Australia … Not the paradise you believe it is …

  4. Is That a Gold Medal PERFORMANCE !!! I think it beats Dawns pilfering of the Flag event !!!

  5. Just bring them all home. Rio has been a disaster from start to finish. Been a complete fiasco.

  6. Sherrill McLauchlan

maybe we should all just wait and see and stop with the judgemental comments, we are not there so we dont know

A voice of reason, how welcome!

Well they all know the rules, you can’t expect to go to another country,an just because you come from here, think you can do what you like,I think the fiasco,is not the games, but the people in charge of looking after ours,in Rio,these people are living below the poverty line, you don’t go wandering around by yourself,or break laws,in these countries, your life is worth less than nothing, just because you are an Olympian, makes no difference,to those with nothing.

    • Ranghora

Great comment Garry! This is it!

they should’ nt have to pay to go to other team sports its the worlds olympics once you represnt your country it should be free for all atheletes they spend years to give people entetrainment so get them out of rio all the people who get muged and robbed you never hear if they get caurght only the one that got shot well done to all get back to aussi and enjoy yourselfs

    • Ranghora

Yeah guys, come back to Aussie to the safety of Mount Druitt, Casula, Logan, Redfern, Cronulla, Parramatta, Sydney town, Kings Cross etc… Watch out for the odd king hit and careful not to get car jacked in Melbourne … Enjoy Australia!

  9. colin

love all these get them out of there comments. They represent Australia not other countries so if they want to go see another country perform then get the right ticket and don’t forge one. quite simply THEY BROKE THE LAW . spoiled brats is what they are. and people are you saying there are no mugging, robberies or murder in Australia? get your head out of the sand

  10. I used to love the games. I didn’t bother with them this year.
As the years have gone by, Australian athletes have become progressively worse in their behaviour. The swim team in particular.
They behave like spoilt naughty children. The only thing they have going for them is their ability to perform. Many aussiekids could perform as well, if not better, than them if given a chance
    I am appalled n disgusted.
