Barry Humphries criticised for sharing this controversial opinion – did he go too far this time? 188

Having made a living out of playing his much-loved doppelgänger Dame Edna, Barry Humphries has raised a few eyebrows with his comments about the world’s most famous transgender woman, Caitlyn Jenner.

In an interview with The Telegraph in the UK ahead of the Dame’s upcoming tour, Humphries said he agreed with Germain Greer who said “trans” women such as Caitlyn Jenner (formerly the Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner) are men “who believe that they are women and have themselves castrated”.

“I agree with Germaine! You’re a mutilated man, that’s all,” he said in the interview. “Self-mutilation, what’s all this carry on? Caitlyn Jenner – what a publicity-seeking ratbag. It’s all given the stamp – not of respectability, but authenticity or something. If you criticise anything you’re racist or sexist or homophobic.”

Humphries comments were made in relation to a question about whether he considered himself to be right wing.

“I don’t know anything about politics,” he said. “But the far Left is so conservative, paradoxically, inflexible, doctrinaire and humourless. You can’t describe the world as it is any more. You get jumped on.”

That said, Humphries is only too happy to oblige.

“I’m happy to say I do. I give offence therefore I am. Not too much offence, though.”

On that note, he tells this tale:“I had a Nazi friend – repentant, he wrote a book about his time in the SS. When he died his widow said among his last words were: ‘Zat Barry Humphries, ze Führer would have adored him.’” Why? “I have no idea,” he shrugs. “It’s hypothetical, since Hitler never actually met me, but I thought it would make a great strapline on a book.”

Humphries has been criticised on social media for his comments about Caitlin Jenner.

Do you think Barry Humphries comments go too far, or does he have a right to share his opinion? Are you a fan of Dame Edna?

  1. Mike here-agree with his comment re critisising anything, you are straight away filed away as homophpbic, sexist or a racist. He made millions from dressing up as a woman, a very funny woman, Jenner will help the ratings of the Kardashian program by doing what he did. I also agree, he is now a castrated male

    • Mike here-no but I don’t have a DNA reading of my mother either, I just know she’s a woman, as far as Dame Edna goes , I know it’s s man playing at being a woman.

    • Mike here-assume yiu are asking about whether I know my mother was a woman. My sister who was present at my birth could, were she alive, attest to the fact that I was born naturally, of my mother as I can attest to the fact that my 3 subsequent siblings were born in the same way, in the front room, at home. If you are talking about Barry Humphries. Well he plays Sir Les Patterson too but I don’t believe Barry is an Aussie Diplomat, although he could probably do a betterjob

    • I agree – this Jenner man/person revolts me! Actually – I find him embarrassing & he makes me cringe!

  2. I’ve laughed with Humphries so many times I can forgive him the occasional “fox’s paw”.

    • Saw him live in Bournemouth some years ago. We were in the third row of the stalls. We spent most of the evening terrified that he would call us – or an item of our clothing – up on stage (he had a net with a long handle to collect shoes). We escaped. But a couple who arrived 10 minutes after the start copped it on and off for the entire evening. Bloody funny, though,

  3. I’m sorry but I have lost all respect for the man after such a demeaning comment, Barry Humphries entertained all of his life as a women. He may not have had the surgery which doesn’t mean that, that separates him from Caitlin Jenner. Maybe he just didn’t have the guts to come out.
