And the Oxford Dictionaries official word for 2014 is… 26

View Profile

Yesterday Oxford Dictionaries revealed the 2014 word of the year and given that last year was “Selfie” this year seems to be quite interesting. Following the trend in pop culture with electronic cigarettes, the word for 2014 is “vape” coming from the term, vaporiser.

‘To vape’ is to inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette. As a noun it describes the actual device.

The word is given this title after Oxford Dictionaries show that the use of the word, “vape” doubled between 2013 and 2014.

There were some interesting words on the short list, too with the following:

bae (n.): a term of endearment for one’s romantic partner, likely a shortening of baby or babe, though some theorize that it is an acronym for “before anyone else.”

budtender (n.): someone who works at a medical marijuana dispensary or retail marijuana shop.

contactless (adj.): describing technologies that allow a smart card, etc., to connect wirelessly to an electronic reader, typically in order to make a payment.

indyref (n.): an abbreviated form of Scotland’s failed referendum to declare independence from the United Kingdom.

normcore (n.): a fashion movement in which ordinary, unfashionable clothing is worn as a deliberate statement.

slacktivist (n.): one who engages in digital activism on the Web which is regarded as requiring little time or involvement. Also slacktivism.

  1. I thought, that we already had words in the English language that would give sufficient explanation for such things, without needing to create what one could suggest, as words which may be….. ‘in vogue’….

  2. This is my favourite of all words. The moment I first heard its meaning my heart was stirred in a way I’ve never known before. “Querencia: (n) a place from which one’s strength is drawn, where one feels at home; the place where you are your most authentic self.” My querencia is when I’m sitting at my computer bringing beloved characters to life and taking them on adventures all around the world. (Or sharing time with my grandson – but that’s a given any day and in any place!)
