An Aussie has won the World Press Photo award with this touching shot

A moving photograph of migrants passing a baby beneath razor-wire has won the prestigious World Press Photo award for 2015.

The image was taken by freelance photographer Warren Richardson on the Serbian-Hungarian border in August last year.

Mr Richardson, aged 48, said the photo was initially rejected by major media organisations. However, judges for the World Press awards called his work “powerful” and “nuanced”.

“(This photo) causes you to stop and consider the man’s face, consider the child. You see the sharpness of the barbed wire and the hands reaching out from the darkness”, judges said.

Other photos nominated for awards dealt with topics such as refugees, race relations and poverty.
