Ways to use lemon that will make your life easier!

Lemons are almost always in season, so get the most out of a big batch by knowing these tips and tricks! They are easy to do and make a very big difference!

Remove odours from the fridge – Soak a piece of cotton wool or tissues in lemon juice, rub over any stains on shelving and leave it in the fridge for 12 hours.

Clean cutting board naturally – slice a lemon in half and rub the open side onto the chopping board thoroughly. Rinse with warm water and stains, germs and odours should be removed.

Insect repellent – squirt lemon juice along windowsills and any door tracks to deter ants. Create a mixture of 1 part lemon juice to 1.5 parts water and 1 part vinegar in a spray bottle and spray outdoor areas to prevent insects.

Clean your microwave – Clean your microwave by pouring 1 part lemon juice and 2 parts water into a microwave proof bowl. Microwave on high for five minutes letting the steam to moisten gunk and then wipe the roof, sides and floor of the microwave with a cloth.

Treat a sore throat – An old wives tale is to gargle lemon juice to treat a sore throat just as you would salt. It is believed to kill any bacteria and infections.

Mouthwash – Use lemon juice for gargling or to “swish and swallow” to keep your breath fresh for longer. Swallowing will help to kill bacteria.

Prevent moths – Stick cloves into a ripe lemon and place in a wardrobe. The lemon won’t rot but will instead dry out creating an odour that is pleasant to us but deters the moths.

Brighten white clothes and remove stains – Make a solution of lemon juice, baking soda and water and allow clothes to soak in it before washing to brighten them. To remove stains make the solution a thick paste by adding less water and paste onto stains. Leave to dry before washing as usual.

Prevent rice from going sticky and gloopy – Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice into your rice to prevent this from happening – simple!

Make scented sachets – Dry lemon peels and pop them into a small breath-easy bag. Tie them up and use as scented draw liners!
