The Ad Standards Board has released its half-yearly list of the most complained about ads on Australian television and the winner will surprise you.

A far cry from that hideous anti-smoking fish-hook ad that made us all cringe, this year’s winning ad, by Holden, must have hit a raw nerve with a few people, well 161 to be exact.

Thus far in 2015, the ASB has lodged more than 2,700 complaints. Last year saw a record number, 5,600 complaints submitted, according to Mumbrella.

Language, discrimination and sex, sexuality and nudity are the three main issues sparking complaints this year.

Here is the Holden ad, which features a man and his son driving a Holden Colorado 7 while towing a caravan.

Ashley Maddison’s ad in which men singi about “looking for someone other than my wife” sparked 138 complaints and resulted in the ad being banned. The extra-marital dating service also scored ninth place on the list for the “looking for someone other than my wife” ad’s counterpart.

Rebel Wilson’s ad for Stan in which the comedian refers to a cat as a “big pussy”came in at third place.

Take a look at the “winning” Holden ad and tell us what you think:

Why do you think this ad sparked so many complaints? Does it offend you in any way?

  1. Dad’s intolerance being taught to the child……dad may have survived the SAFE overtaking while towing…..lets hope the child survives his teenage years behind the wheel

    • Kids will quickly mimick a parent that lets a naughty word slip,I doubt a child that young would be thinking….”When I grow up,I am going to burn rubber around these bloody caravans”

  2. The word bloody is as aussie as Vegemite or meat pies. If that’s what people are complaining about our transition to a nanna state is complete. Good to see the board had the sense to not ban the ad.

  3. When ads come on TV I must have a mental switch I must turn on as if someone asks me about a particular I have no idea what they are talking about. Radio is different. Maybe you can’t see it so you brain is more aware. There is an ad on the radio which advertises the selling of tiles. I hate it so much I would never go into that shop even if it were the only tile place in Brisbane

  4. It isn’t the word bloody I object to it is the attitude of the father role model is providing for the child. I do understand why it receives complaints.

  5. Thanks for that perspective Heather Macgregor. I was looking at it in terms of annoyance, and didn’t see the deeper implications.

  6. Yes, it bothers me everytime I see it. Teaching the little boy that fast driving is acceptable behaviour, and intolerence of slower drivers.
