The Vatican has announced that bishops are “not necessarily” required to report suspected child abuse to the police, despite Pope Francis vowing to stamp out institutional abuse.

Newly appointed bishops have been told that it’s instead the responsibility of “victims or families” to report child abuse to authorities.

According to The Guardian, an official Catholic document has instructed that bishops’ “only duty was to address (abuse) allegations internally”.

“It is not necessarily the duty of the bishop to report suspects to authorities, the police or state prosecutors in the moment when they are made aware of crimes or sinful deeds”, the document states.

These latest instructions are at odds with Pope Francis’s commitment to eradicate insitutitional abuse. He has previously called for “zero tolerance” of child abuse within the Catholic church.

“Everything possible must be done to rid the church of the scourge of the sexual abuse”, Pope Francis has previously stated.

Members of the public have been dismayed by this latest Catholic ruling, whilst survivors of abuse have likewise expressed their ongoing disappointment.

One man wrote online, “it is your solemn duty and obligation to report such gross and disgusting acts.
You cannot in good conscience call yourself a God-fearing Christian if you hide or ignore this kind of abuse”.

Whilst another woman added, “So your organisation is found to have a systemic issue, but instead of addressing it properly you decide that it’s much better to try and bury it?”

Are you shocked by this latest Catholic ruling? Do you believe that bishops should be obliged to report instances of abuse to the police? Are you angry about this news?

    • What do you mean back to? It has never stopped disgraceful behaviour from the Catholic Church

    • I have done a counselling course of many years, and this rule that any ministers of any churches stands they do not have to report these issues to the police, i think it is so very wrong. It is just a cover up a lot of m inisters and Priests of different churches use their position for all these evil doings!

  4. Just goes to show the church is only interested in protecting them self, not looking after the children .

  5. Once again this Church show is true colours, its first responsibility should be to its parishioners and their children. While abuse is being hidden and not reported Catholic children are at risk. I had high hope for this Pope bringing about good change in this Church but sadly I have been disappointed.

    • As per usual, protecting & covering up the repulsive acts of so called men of god & members of their congregation come before the safety of children, to me they are no more than a cult, this is disgusting, looks like nothing will change with him at the top.๐Ÿ˜”

    • Nothing changes still i did not expect any difference while the old guard are in charge ,it only took them 500 years to forgive Martin Luther and apologize for the the wrongs done to non catholics,so what hope do we have for them to come clean on this issue.

    • These priest should be hung up by the Penis outside the church door in the community where they committed these offences as a warning to parents to keep their children away from there. I suspect we would see priests hanging by the penis in every city in the world

    • I am not religeous but I do remember this from Sunday School.. Jesus said, suffer the little children to come unto me.. he did NOT add so I can sexually abuse them. If Catholics belive in heaven and hell, then as they get near to death they should prepare for a hottter climate because I don’t think any God would support this being done in his name

    • So true David, & as far as I’m concerned anyone that covers up or protects these animals is just as guilty as the ones that perform these vile acts, & infact even worse because they protect them knowing that even more children will suffer.

    • I have no trust in any religious order having seen some and heard of many of their atrocities in the past and present. This pope has just confirmed my feelings, what a hypocrite, no wonder Pell is getting to stay in the Vatican because he is ‘sick’.

    • David James
Unfortunately they believe that if they ask for forgiveness and are given the last rites when they are dying, then all will be forgiven and forgotten and they’ll go to heaven.

    • So right Ruth, one ordinary human being taking away all ‘sin’ from another with a few scripted words lol. Guess hell is going to be busy. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

    • Yes we are Lee but without the support of the Parishoners, the Catholic church would fail and cease to be.

    • Ruth Hourigan sadly lied to just like the stupid muslim terrorist being promised his 76 virgins. The “forgivness” for the catholic and the “76 virgins” can never be confirmed. They are both someones idea of a joke. Lol

    • Really??. the blatant bigotry and ignorance shown in these posts does no credit to the site; it has just provided for the usual bigots to air their spleen. This is not about child abuse, it is about anti Catholicism. Sorry if you have been or perceive that you have been hurt by “the Church” but you have hijacked what was a good blog site with a lot to offer – not to this little brown duck any more.

      • RosemaryAnne Lorrimar, I so agree with you, not only for tonights blog but also for previous ones, such judgemental people, for goodness sake get a life & help the people who are not as perfect as you are !!

    • Really RosemaryAnne???? Blatant bigotry and ignorance? Child abuse is a highly emotive issue and it can produce extemes. Hanging offending priests by their privates would be a little extreme but as I’ve said child abuse is an emotive subject. To suggest it is anti Catholicism to discuss or comment on what has been and is a stinking festering sore on the Roman Catholic faith is a bit rich. However I’d welcome you enlightening me on where you found blatant bigotry and ignorance in the posts.

    • Unbelievable….why don’t they practise what they preach..The church should be protecting little children from abuse or any abuse…not trying to pass the buck…when they put their robes on they seem to think they are beyond mere mortals..and any judgement is contained within the church….too much of this been happening.

    • RosemaryAnne Lorrimar go tell to all the people who are before the Royal commission now that have been abused Catholic priests. They have been betrayed by the church they trusted

    • RosemaryAnne Lorrimar what are you on about? It is about the Catholic church and child abuse. When priests are told they aren’t obliged to report sexual abuse, who do you think we should blame. The priests ARE the Catholic church, there is no seperating them

    • I was abused by a priest, Father Timothy O’Callaghan, in Lancefield in 1966. I wasn’t the only one. That bastard Pell decided to move him to Trentham, where no doubt he continued his molesting ways. Along comes Rosemary and tells me I should still love the church. I don’t think so

    • Sue Todd don’t let the Church stop your relationship with God! Jesus warned us about the religious. I was absolutely shocked and disgusted in how the Anglican Church Professional Standards protected the Church and made every excuse under the sun. Oh dear, they don’t think that vicars lie! Thank goodness we all will face a judgment day.
