The unbelievable transformation of Roseanne Barr

Do you remember the grumpy housewife with the annoying voice, evil eyes and TV show that we all loved throughout the late 80s and early 90s?

Roseanne was mean and overweight, and she was didn’t try to hide either of these things. We never saw her out of a big, shapeless T-shirt and she was usually eating chips out of a bag.

Her show, Roseanne, ran for a decade and was popular in much loved here in Australia. But since it went off air in 1997, we haven’t heard much from the eponymous hero.

These days, at 63, Roseanne is almost unrecognisable. She has shed lots of weight, shunned the shapeless clothes and even embarked on a presidential campaign back in 2012.

While she’s still as famous as ever in the States, she told The Daily Beast she is happy not to be playing a character as she did on Roseanne.

“Once you’re famous, you’re never not famous. My show is on five times a day in 15 countries or something. I’m still relevant to people. I was young then, man. I was in my late 30s, early 40s. You needed so much energy. I couldn’t keep that up now.

“It’s hard in your 60s [to imagine doing] that much work again. It was boring. I just didn’t want to continue doing that because there are too many sacrifices to continue it.”

Roseanne is suffering from macular degeneration and glaucoma, which doctors say will eventually leave her blind. Because of this smokes marijuana, and is keen to see it legalised.

“It’s a good medicine, you know,” she says. “I have macular degeneration and glaucoma, so it’s good for me for that because I have pressure in my eyes. It’s a good medicine for a lot of things.”

Were you or your kids a fan of Roseanne? What do you think of her new look?
