Revealed: this is what’s stopping Tony Abbott from saying yes 197

Leaks from within the Liberal party have revealed the real reason Tony Abbott is holding back on giving same-sex marriage the green light and, surprisingly, it has less to do with his personal beliefs than we may have thought.

Insiders have confided to Fairfax journalists that pushing forward with marriage equality could cost the Prime Minister his leadership, and have likened it to Malcolm Turnbull’s experience with the emissions trading scheme.

Turnbull proposed backing Labor in the ETS and promptly lost his position to Tony Abbott in 2009.

Liberal National MP George Christensen said,”The party policy to retain the definition of marriage as contained in the Marriage Act is supported by the majority of Liberal and National MPs and senators and I’d say many of them would hold the view that this is what our party stands for”.

“The party membership didn’t like being ignored on the ETS and they won’t on this one either,” adds Mr Christensen.

He is one of “several” rightwing backbenchers that have voiced their concerns to the newspapers overnight, casting doubt that the idea of same-sex marriage reform is  “not an inevitability”, and certainly not by the end of the year.

So it seems Mr Abbott is caught between a rock and a hard place: on the one hand, the large and vocal push for marriage equality from the public; and on the other the potential for a catastrophic party split.

One MP said, “If you put this to a ballot in the party room, this does not get up”.

If Tony Abbott is to be the Prime Minister under which Australia’s marriage laws move forward, he will need to show leadership on the issue.

As we know, Mr Abbott doesn’t believe in marriage equality. The question is: does he believe it’s an issue worth fighting for?

What do you think the Prime Minister will choose? To move forward, back away… or puts his fingers in his ears and hope the issue goes away?

  1. He is not making excuses, he is thinking of his political future….that is ok with me….but I think he could find away around putting it forward without him behind it and let’s see what the Liberals do with it. He can refuse to have anything to do with it and let the rest of them do the work….he could have a captains call and stand away.

  2. It’s not an issue worth fighting for.
The 2% tail wagging the 98% tiger
Those who support same sex marriage want that nice warm feeling that they get from showing everyone how tolerant and compassionate they are
They can get the same feeling by peeing in their pants
There are more important issues to consider.. let’s sort out those issues before we waste time on redefing marriage to suit a minority view.

    • Think you have just said what many are thinking.

  3. He will not show leadership on this issue because he will going against his own beliefs, a strong leader guides his team forward , a weak leader lets the mob lead him and that is what is happening

    • I agree with Janet, I’d prefer a strong leader any day. Don’t be bullied Tony. You’d be surprised how many people are behind you, the media is just playing to the (very vocal) minority’

    • A strong leader stands up for his beliefs and doesn’t let anyone lead him. We are talking about a minority group here of under 4% of our entire population! Why this is such an important issue right now is beyond me. Well we know Bill Shorten thinks it’s a priority! But I don’t! Sorry Bill..Not!…….

    • your from Newcastle Molly Holland..that must be hard for you, Newcastle is an ALP town and been since 1910

  4. The dependant spouse allowance was dumped by Julia Gillard. That has helped the Abbott government move forward.

    • Kallista Gleghorn, glad you can. I missed out, it cut out if born after June 1952. I was born Feb 1953. I looked forward to buying something I needed. The money went straight back into the community.

    • you can’t expect handouts out all the time Kim, according this This Abbott Government we are broke and Gillard made the right decision !!

    • Janet Farmer, I do not expect handouts. Julia Gillard dumped the allowance in preparation for her same sex marriage campaign and re-election.
      It was politically motivated.
Federal money isn’t saved, it’s taken and given to another group to buy votes., it’s about power.

  5. A guy in Florida USA has married a bag containing 1 kg of his favorite drug, he cannot live without it. Florida is one of the 5 states with marriage equality laws. What next?

    • We are Australians , not Americans. there are many differences between the countries, even though The Liberal Party would like to turn us into the USA downunder !! Many States in the USA recognize Gay Marriage. You probably find that person will be arrested on drug charges..that is a huge amount of any drug

    • Good one Percy. How do we know the bloke married his bag of drugs? The person who reported it got the story in McDonalds, while purchasing a “Big Mac”, from Elvis.

    • You probably read this nonsense on the internet. But then again, everything on the internet is true. How silly of me.

    • Percy Mason, your colourful ‘drug marriage’ story from Florida USA perfectly illustrates the FARCE of allowing any union — regardless of sexual orientation — to be called “marriage.”

    • There is a big difference Geoff Burton with 2 humans marrying and that of an innate object and a human marrying it was obviously a publicity stunt
