Food is the key to our hearts, but some are better than others. These five humble groceries are also natural aphrodisiacs, that can ignite a fire in your loved one these holidays.

Natural foods are arguably better aphrodisiacs than Viagra and other drugs. As researchers from Canada’s Guelph University explained, “these drugs can produce headache, muscle pain and blurred vision, and can have dangerous interactions with other medications”.

On the other hand said Canadian researchers, “aphrodisiacs have been used for thousands of years all around the world”.

1. Chocolate

In case you needed another excuse to eat chocolate, recent studies have proven it can spark romance. Indeed chocolate contains flavonoids, which are bodily chemicals that can lower an individual’s blood pressure and help them feel more relaxed.

Researchers at Canada’s University of Guelph have also discovered that because chocolate contains caffeine, it increases serotonin, endorphins and other feel-good transmitters in the brain. This can leave you feeling loved up, joyful and in the mood for romance.

2. Bananas

Bananas have a suggestive appearance to begin with. Now doctors have claimed that an enzyme in bananas (called bromelain) can enhance a male’s confidence and performance in the bedroom.

Oprah’s favourite surgeon, Dr Oz, also says that bromelain can boost testosterone levels, whilst the natural potassium and Vitamin B in bananas can increase energy in your loved one.

3. Avocado

Spreading some avocado on your loved one’s sandwiches might not be such a bad idea. The Aztecs revered the avocado for its love-making properties, and the fruit’s health benefits have been studied for years.

The University of Illinois has previously determined that high Vitamin E levels in avocado can increase feelings of arousal, “youthful vigour and energy levels” in people.

4. Honey

Why do they call it a honeymoon? Why do they talk about birds and the bees? Well, because honey has an established of reputation of being a natural aphrodisiac.

Honey contains the organic chemical boron, which is known to regulate oestrogen levels. Boron has also proven to be particularly important for post-menopausal women, because it improves the absorption of calcium, magnesium and other essential nutrients.

5. Watermelon

The perfect summer fruit, watermelon has also been dubbed “Nature’s viagra”. Watermelons contain the antioxidant lycopene, which is known to relax blood vessels and improve circulation throughout the body.

Researchers from Texas A&M University also found that lycopene can be found in tomato, grapefruits and certain olives. “Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra”, researchers said, “but it’s a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects”.

Will you purchase any of these groceries during your next shop? Do you believe that natural aphrodisiacs are preferable to drugs, like Viagra?
