This week, Starts at 60 member Lou wrote to us, asking for some community advice:

I have been looking all around trying to find some sort of income protection or debt payment insurance in the event I take ill and use up my sick leave before returning to work. I am 61 and the ‘don’t come here’ line seems to be 59. Help!

Can you help her? What is your advice?

The Starts at 60 writers team seek out interesting topics and write them especially for you.

  1. As soon as I turned 65 I got letters from 2 insurance companies saying I no longer qualified for income protection insurance. I’m still working 57hr fortnight. The government wants us to work longer but we are definitely being discriminated against be Insurance companies. Talk about “what pisses you off”.

  2. I suggest Lou sees an insurance broker. The insurance will be available from someone, but I suspect it becomes almost unaffordable as you get older. I know travel insurance starts to increase in price as you get older with our travel agent warning us that 81 is the next giant increase.
