Reliving Saturday night folk sessions

Around the grand old age of 15, I fell in love with folk music and frequented a folk club in Parramatta, NSW, called Pigalle. Pigalle was a coffee lounge on weekdays and a folk-music club on Friday and Saturday nights. The owner, Frank encouraged up-and-coming folk singers, some of whom went on to make successful careers in music, to hone their performing skills in front of an audience. We sat at long tables listening to the music, drinking coffee and solving the problems of the world. (Karen)

Folk music was just so powerful. It brought people together and gave friends a common passion and purpose.

Were you just like Karen? Did you spend your Saturday nights with your friends at hotels or at home listening to your favourite folk hits?

Do you remember such hits as Puff (the Magic Dragon), Go Tell it on a Mountain, If I had a Hammer, Blowin’ in the Wind, Lemon Tree and Where have all the Flowers Gone?

They are still so well known today and are some of the best songs to come out of the ’60s and ’70s.

Tonight, let’s pretend we’re back in the ’60s at the folk club or in your lounge room with friends. We’ve found the top-four folk songs of the ’60s and are bringing them to you tonight so you can reminisce and enjoy the music we once loved.
