Farewell to First Lady, Hazel Hawke

May 23, 2013

Hazel Hawke, former “first lady” of Australia and ex-wife of Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, has passed away peacefully according to news reports, surrounded by her family. Hazel has fought a long battle with Dementia, which has led to complications in more recent months.

Hazel Hawke died peacefully on Thursday, surrounded by family, who has been with her in her last days as she finally succumbed to complications of dementia.

The family said in a statement reported in The Sydney Morning Herald that they appreciate the great affection many have for Hazel, but asked for privacy at this stage.

There will be a private funeral for family and close friends.

How do you remember Hazel?

Hazel Hawke was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2001, and placed in high level care in 2009 as the illness progressed. Sadly, today she lost her battle. An honourable lady, she endured a very public heartbreak, when former prime minister Bob Hawke left her in 1995 to marry his long time on-again, off-again mistress. Admirable in her strength, she never uttered a bad word through the process, standing strong as the highly respected figure our country has always loved her as.
