Things that are turning 60 in 2015

It’s hard to believe how fast we are travelling through the 21st century. It feels like yesterday when the Y2K panic was doing the round in the papers and nightly news segments, making all of us believe that the sky was going to fall. With us already facing 2015, we thought we would have a little look back and see what was happening 60 years ago in 1955.

60 years ago this year….

January 19: The game Scrabble is released and played by families across the world.

January 22: The Pentagon announces for the first time its plans to build Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’s) armed with nuclear warheads.

March 2: Claudette Colvin, an African American girl, refuses to give her seat to an older Caucasian women, resulting in her being handcuffed and taken to the police station.

April 15: Ray Kroc opens the first ever McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois.

June 16: Disney’s cartoon film ‘Lady and the Tramp’ premieres in Chicago.

July 18: Disneyland in California opens.

August 27: First edition of the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ is released.

September 30: James Dean is killed when his car crashes into a highway junction in California at the age of 24.

October 3: The Mickey Mouse Club debuts on the ABC network in the US.

November 1: The Vietnam War begins.

December 1: Rosa Parks is thrown off a bus after refusing to give up her seat for a Caucasian lady. This prompts the Montgomery Bus Boycott and begins the equal rights movement.

December 19: Dame Edna makes her first appearance.
