We’ve all probably heard our granddaughters singing along to a few very catchy boy-band tunes over the last year or so. It’s also very likely that they were by One Direction. The UK boy band that has successfully stolen hearts from teenage girls all around the world has announced some massive news this morning.

Singer Zayn Malik has announced that he will be leaving the band to live a normal 22-year-old life.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that publicist Simon Jones confirmed the announcement in a statement from the band on Wednesday:

“After five incredible years Zayn Malik has decided to leave One Direction. Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis will continue as a four-piece and look forward to the forthcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, due to be released later this year”.

Zayn also shared some words saying, “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined.

“But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart.

“I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world”.

The sad news may bring back memories of Ringo Starr or George Harrison announcing his departure from The Beatles in 1968, so today let’s remember that our darling little granddaughter’s may be devastated – just as we were.

  1. don’t know what to do …have bought her 5 pairs of OneDirection socks…..what should I do with Zayn’s ??

  2. Maybe he’s the only one that’s not gay and he’s the odd boy out. Now they can be called Misdirection. And don’t all you older women critisize these groupie girls. You most likely did the same thing when The Beetles broke up.

    • No, we ” older women” understand completely, the joy and anguish of love for a pop idol,. We had some of the greatest, Elvis, Rick Nelson. Johny O’ Keefe,Bill Hayley, Little Richard. We adored them, so when our grandaughters cry and scream at their idols, it brings back happy memories of doing the same thing.

  3. Same thing happened when Robbie Williams left “Take That,” They had to set up a phone counciling service for all the heart broken fans..:(

  4. It was mass stupidity back in the day and it is mass stupidity now. Never could understand the idolising of so called stars. All that mass hysteria over nothing. All I can say is get over it and get a life that actually means something. Here’s a thought. Tell your granddaughter to make her own music and sell it to the gullible public then she won’t have time to sit around and mourn the loss of just another ho hum boy.

  5. My goodness Debra you are a grumpy one…There have been young women losing their hearts over famous people for years..just a little more dignified than before the arrival of the Beatles…

    • Beryl. I am not grumpy, just sick of the stupid hype associated with these boy bands. If he had dropped dead I would have said RIP but he only left the band. Nothing mind blowing. Now, if Starts at 60 were to write a story about the German airliner that crashed I would have said a lot more but it seems that there is not enough controversy or interest surrounding this disaster compared to Zayn’s leaving a band. After all the air play and comments on this site after the Asian airline going missing, The Russians, (allegedly) shooting down a plane over The Ukraine I would have thought that another air tragedy would get at least a short mention before we had to worry if our granddaughters were going to expire because of a broken heart. Somehow I think our priorities have taken a walk off the planet and the only thing we must worry about is boy bands.
