Don’t spend up to $10 on two litres of fabric softener…. this homemade recipe costs a fraction and is just as effective!

Try it for yourself by following these instructions.

Makes 3L

  • 5 cups of hot water
  • 3 cups of vinegar
  • 1 cup of hair conditioner (hint: you can vary the smell of the fabric softener by using different hair conditioners)
  • 1 container (to store)

  • Mix the hair conditioner and the hot water together in a bowl (the hot water will help to smooth the lumps of the conditioner)
  • Add the vinegar into the mixture
  • Pour the mix into a container of your choice.
  • Add 1/4 cup of fabric softer to a full load.

  1. Have been making this for 6 months since I saw it on facebook. It is a great fabric softener and doesn’t build up in your machine…..

  2. I don’t use softeners, it buggers up the washing machine! My ex was washing machine mechanic and I saw the damage it did!

    • So true Josie. About 10 yes ago I had a washing machine mechanic to do some repair. First thing he said was ” you use softeners don’t you” ? He said never ever. It will damage your machine. I have since stopped

  3. I use to only use white vinegar but since I saw this mix the water lessens the smell of vinegar and you use the cheapest hair conditioner and that just gives a nice smell. I think it’s the vinegar that prevents built up in the machine.
