Clean all those hard-to-reach places with this awesome “slime”

This simple DIY recipe is great to catch dirt and grime from hard to reach places such as keyboards, mobile phones, printers and car vents. It can also be a fun task to do with the grandchildren, they will be distracted with colour and slime while helping you clean.

Ingredients:

• 1 tablespoon of school glue
• 1 tablespoon of water
• 4 tablespoons of Borax (can be found in the detergent aisle in Coles or Woolies)
• 4 tablespoons of water

Method:

1. In one bowl mix the school glue and water ( 1 tablespoons each)
2. In another bowl mix the Borax and water ( 4 tablespoons each)
3. Combine the two bowls and mix well until a slimy texture forms
4. Optional to add food colouring
5. The slime dries quickly so make sure you keep it in an airtight container.

The science behind the slime

All slime found in commercial stores and DIY are made the same way. The reason is that slime is made of only two ingredients polyvinyl alcohol (a main ingredient in washable school glue) and borate ion (which you can get from borax). If you want to dissolve the slime you can use vinegar. The acetic acid found in vinegar disrupts the hydrogen bond between the PVA molecule and the borate ion.
