Life hack: clean your ceiling fans in seconds 14

View Profile

Cleaning ceiling fans is one of the most annoying household tasks – they’re hard to get to, spin out of reach at the slightest touch, and the dust goes everywhere as soon as you try to wipe them down. We’ve found a fuss-free, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that solution to this age old drama.

The secret weapon? A pillowcase!

Simply place a pillowcase over a fan blade and then slide it off, holding the blade to wipe it down. Not only will you clean the dust from the fan, but the fluff will remain inside the pillowcase. Once you have cleaned all of the blades, take the pillowcase outside and turn inside out, shaking the dust out or into a bin! When your fans are squeaky clean, throw the pillowcase into the wash and you’re done!

Friendly reminder!

Don’t forget to switch your fan from its ‘summer’ setting, to the ‘winter’ one! This handy little switch changes the direction of blade rotation and pushes hot air down, instead of lifting it up – helping to warm your home during the chillier months.

  1. ppp People like to complain. yes in some houses they can be very high.and can be an effort to get the step ladder up. But after that not so hard to hold them whilst wiping down. And simply use a damp cloth to clean.

  2. That’s a good idea. I just use a cobweb broom which is quite long and gets all the dust off instantly with no need for ladders. I do it when I’ve stripped the sheets on a weekday for washing, and then just vacuum the mattress protector to finish up. Easy!! :_

  3. I cant reach them even on my ladder. I use a cobweb brush
    Im not very tall

  4. You would need a friggin big pillowcase for our ceiling fans…about 40″ across! Plus 9 ft ceilings..I think not.

  5. Years ago I bought fan blade covers. They look like white knee highs. Put one on each blade, when dirty, remove, wash & put back on. Unfortunately at the time, I only got enough for 2 fans & I’ve never seen them again. Shame, they are the best

    • I buy them at Big W and wash them when necessary and put them back on 🙂

  6. Good idea, I have knee high stockings over my fan blades and roll them off and replace with new ones every year.

  7. Mine only have slow medium and fast & off. No winter switch. A good tip though. Will try it.

  8. I just slip knee hi stockings over the blades, then u just slip the off and into the washing machine.

  9. Thank you for this hint. Am selling my house and so need to clean them
