Brrrr! It’s winter and it’s colder than any other time of year. It’s also the time for flus – ugh! How annoying. Influenza can be dangerous for people over 65, so it’s important to get rid of it as soon as possible, or see your doctor if your symptoms are severe.

If you’ve got a sore throat and the sniffles, you might be tempted to grab something – what is it?

Is it hot water with lemon and honey? Or is it a steam bath? Do you prefer to go for a brisk walk to clear your head, or get some more sleep?

Chicken soup is also an old wives remedy but some people swear by it. Others use neti pots to clear their sinuses, while others prefer a nice hot bath.

  1. A herbal tincture of Echinacae, Thyme, Andrographis, and Elderberry, plus Horseradish if there is sinus congestion, or Mullein for a productive cough.
    A great home remedy is 2 cloves garlic, 1/2 teaspoon ginger, chillis to taste,, 2 lemons, Manuka honey and hot water.

  2. Perhaps have a flu injection, I mean if you get the flu every year, why wouldn’t you. I have only had the proper flu once in my life, about 30 years ago, in the days when I didn’t have flu injections.

  3. Sorry can’t remember! Been having the flu shot for 19 years, only had a couple of light colds in that time. I expect I would do the same as for a cold, go to bed get plenty of rest in a stable temperature. Plenty of clear fluids maybe panadol and stay away from anyone else, don’t spread your cold. Get the flu shot every April!

  4. Grandma’s insistence on Porridge with a bit of honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon for breakfast works for me.

  5. Can’t remember having flu ever. Lots of bad colds and coughs, and a couple of days off work and bedrest is the best. Lemsip helps too.
