Remember when you’d angrily grab your pen and paper and write a letter quickly to whoever was on your hit list, be it a bank, clothing store or member of Parliament, lest you forget your anger in an hour’s time? You’d rush down to the post office with your letter in hand and slobber on the envelope to make sure it was sealed. You didn’t want it getting lost so you checked and double checked the address in the phone book.

If you were lucky, you’d get a curt thank you in the mail. It never felt personalised but every blue moon, you might be lucky to get a signature from the person you’d addressed your complaint to, and you would hold it up to the light to make sure it was real pen and not photocopied.

I guess I’m kind of nostalgic for those ‘will they, won’t they’ days but who needs them? Right now I could write a 500 word rant on the Facebook page of the pizza place who forgot my order or the hairdressers who irritated my scalp. It seems like the whingers have got their wish as more and more social media rants go viral.

As a result, companies have had to get off their backsides and respond quickly – they don’t want to be seen to be ignoring someone who has so thoughtfully left a novel on their Facebook page! They risk a boycott or at the very least a wave of other complaints if they don’t promptly resolve the matter.

But is it really a good thing? I’m of the opinion that most complaints don’t need a phone call to the business – I just suck it up. But some others feel that every issue, mistake, stuff-up and offence is worthy of a viral campaign. Are we giving power to idiots is what I’m saying. And that’s not to say that the small issues don’t warrant a complaint, but there are other methods of having it rectified, but I guess there’s no way of getting around an Australians strong desire to have a whinge.

Do you think that these complaints on Facebook are just a case of people jumping on the bandwagon? Or it is good to make businesses and companies take ownership of their downfalls?

  1. companies etc need to be aware of their stuff ups, aussies tolerate too much crap from to many people /places

  2. Can’t post complaints now – Australia Post is too slow and way too expensive (they have to pay their GM so many $millions). Public complaints via Facebook give the general public some idea of the way the businesses are working – probably those complaints would get acted on much better than private complaints anyway.

  3. The comments you listed are from people trying to get something for nothing, if I was the company these complaints were addressed to, I would be wanting proof before I compensated anyone.And how do they know that these complaints were not fabricated by an opposing supermarket chain?

  4. Some of the alleged complaints on Facebook make me wonder. Photos and names of alleged offenders are pasted without any legal proceedings. I am sure one legal challenge will happen one day. The law enforcement agencies require direct and hard evidence before charges are laid. I have seen cases that were abandoned because the legal paperwork wasn’t correct. Just an opinion.

  5. Some of the whingers do go overboard – but the whinges do get seen and not just swept under the carpet or even worse ignored. Go for it!

  6. Some of these complaints are good entertainment value. I agree that it seems that more people complain today because it is easy. Just get online and type away. I remember years ago on a holiday to Canberra we went to Question Time. My daughter was 11 and she was shocked at the carry on in the House. She made the comment that if she behaved like that I would smack her bottom. After much discussion we decided that she should write to Mr. Howard and complain. She did this and we forgot about it. About a month later she received a reply. It was a lovely letter and signed by Mr Howard. We examined it very closely and we are convinced that he actually signed it. She was thrilled and treasures that letter to this day. Yes I think we have lost something with the advent of complaining on line.

  7. The extremes and vitriol in political whinging is totally out of control. Many people don’t even read the initiative or fact check their position before dashing off a complaint regardless of support/opposition to the policy of the major parties and the Greens.

    • Keep it in mind Ross that having an open Political opinion is some thing relatively new in this country, before the internet Politics was not something you discussed outside of your family circle, just like discussing religion it was not considered polite. The bag is well and truly opened now and everyone has a right to a view, regardless of if they are right or wrong, but I can understand what you are saying, I have seen some pretty far fetched views from people who do not follow the same political view that I have

    • I find those that always support their party of choices policy regardless of its quality odd. No political party gets it right all the time. Too often none of the facts are checked and the comments just wrong. Different opinions are great but based on something factual please.

    • Discussing politics and policies is important. Ranting and vitriol is not, when you make it personal you change the dynamics, it may make you feel better but is no benefit to anyone, and it’s pretty boring, I couldn’t be bothered reading any of it. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech but with it comes responsibility.

    • You are so right ,Ross. It never ceases to amaze me the level of bitterness/bile/facile commentary out there on social media.Open up some feeds and post a contra point of view and you will be lampooned,lambasted to within an inch of your facebook life.
      There are a lot of haters out there,Ross.If they won gold lotto they would whinge that the first prize wasn’t enough as a result of some action by Gilliard /Rudd/Swann/Abbott (cross out as you might think appropriate)

  8. Poor behaviour by staff reported online with accompanying video can be the big killer for a business.
    I have phoned airlines and telephone companies and got nowhere. In two cases, one over paying an overseas telephone company bill with my Australian credit card after they changed their online site, and the other after an airline tore part of my suitcase. I posted my complaint online and at least received a response, but neither was ever really resolved satisfactorily. I find Hotel and restaurant reviews great though in TripAdvisor and similar apps, but people only tend to post if their experience was bad or exceptionally good so some weighing up is required.

  9. Some of the complains are justified, but some people post complaints on FB about anything and everything – they need to get a life. I don’t think its a bad idea to post a justified complaint on FB lets people know whats going on out there, and lets face it companies don’t want bad publicity do they.

    Oh how so true.Bile,rants, negativity – particularly as to politics.Can’t people be a little bit positive.Don’t they see the otherside or do they just ignore it because it doesn’t suit THEIR agenda.As I have said before: there are a lot of bitter people out there who if they won gold lotto first prize wouldn’t be enough because somehow or other the amount had been diminished by some action by Rudd/Gilliard/Abbot (cross out ads you consider appropriate).
    I have now finished my negative rant.
    Seriously however, couldn’t we have a National Day of POSITIVITY.
