9 natural ways to treat swollen feet at home

Do you have swollen feet, whether from a health condition or something else? It can be so uncomfortable and really limit your ability to do things.

Swelling in your feet and ankles is called edema, and there are a lot of things that can cause the problem. To summarise, what’s happening is your body is having trouble fighting gravity to move blood and fluids back up your legs, so your ankles, feet, and even your legs can begin to swell.

While edema is not exactly harmful, it is uncomfortable. If you are having severe discomfort or one leg is swelling up more, please see your doctor.

Here are some natural remedies to help soothe that swelling:

1. Magnesium

Magnesium deficiency can contribute to edema, and taking a supplement can help give you some relief. The recommended daily intake for magnesium is 350mg per day.

2. Tonic water

This one might sound a little odd, but soaking tonic water can help with swelling. The quinine and the bubbles can help reduce inflammation. Try it once every few days.

3. Grapefruit essential oil

A warm bath can also help with swelling, and so can boosting it with a few drops of grapefruit essential oil! If you prefer a massage over a bath, simply mix your grapefruit oil with olive or coconut oil and give yourself a massage in a circular motion.

4. Epsom salts

Epsom salts are the holy grail for swelling and are often used by athletes. You can either soak in a full tub with a cup of epsom salts, or simply dip your swollen feet into a foot bath with the minerals.

5. Elevate your feet

Elevate your feet every chance you get, especially when you’re relaxing in the evening. Make sure your feet are above your heart for the most benefit.

6. Drink more water

This might sound like a no brainer but oftentimes people with swollen feet have dehydration. Upping your fluid intake can help dilute the salt in your system that caused edema, so aim to increase your fluids as much as possible.

7. Avoid excess salt

A bit of salt is good for you, and is in fact needed for the body to function well. But too much salt can cause water retention and should be avoided. If you are overweight, consider losing some weight, so you reduce the pressure that is put on your muscles, joints and bones.

8. Vinegar

This will help to relieve any pain you have. First, heat up equal amounts of vinegar and water in a pot. Soak a towel in the fluid and wrap your foot or ankle in the towel. Leave it there for about five minutes. Repeat the entire process about three or four times.

9. Cucumber

This will help to absorb the fluid and decrease your time in discomfort. Get a slice of cucumber and place it on your foot, wrapping it with a cotton cloth or a bandage.
