9 homemade natural beauty products

Why spend hundreds of dollars buying beauty products when you can make them at home? They’ll be better for you a won’t break the bank.

Here are our favourite DIY recipes for beauty products!

 

1. Chocolate scented lotion bars

These body bars smell as good as they feel. This recipe is great because it is flexible, leaving lots of room for your creativity. These body bars are super hydrating and make great gifts.

Ingredients: 

  • ¾ cup coconut oil
  • ¾ cup grated beeswax or beeswax pastilles
  • ½ cup cocoa butter
  • ¼ cup shea butter – or an extra ¼ cup of cocoa butter can be substituted if you prefer
  • 20 drops essential oils – get creative! Try choosing fragrances that compliment chocolate such as lemon, lavender, peppermint, orange or cinnamon
  • 3 teaspoons Vitamin E oil

Method

  1. Heat the beeswax, cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter over medium heat until all the ingredients are melted and remove from the heat.
  2. Stir the vitamin E and essential oils into the mixture once it has cooled.
  3. Pour the mixture into silicone moulds before the the mixture before the mixture has set hard, which may happen quickly, so act fast!
  4. Allow the mixture to completely cool and gently work the body bars out of the moulds.

 

2. Natural perfume

Perfumes may contain extra hidden ingredients that you may not be aware of. This natural perfume is a beautifully subtle substitute that won’t hurt your pocket.

Ingredients: 

Creates one 10 ml roll on bottle of perfume:

  • 10ml of grapeseed oil (about 2 teaspoons)
  • 2-10 drops of your chosen essential oils (10 drops is a 5 per cent dilution)
  • 1, 10ml glass roll-on-bottle or spray bottle for storage and application
  • Address label paper to print label, optional

Method

  1. Drop the grapeseed oil into the bottle using a dropper
  2. Add your chosen essential oils to the bottle
  3. Close the bottle with the lid and lightly shake the bottle to mix the ingredients
  4. Design and print your label and affix it to the bottle (optional)

 

3. Coconut oil makeup remover

Coconut oil for alternative therapy

This method is totally natural and only involves one ingredient, coconut oil! Not only does it remove stubborn makeup like waterproof mascara but it also is nourishing and hydrating for your skin.

Ingredients

  • Coconut oil (same coconut oil that you use to cook with)
  • Facial cloth

Method: 

  1. Sanitise your hands
  2. Dip your fingers into the oil (you may need to heat a small portion of the oil if it has hardened) and scoop out a small portion
  3. Rub the gently oil into your face and problem makeup areas
  4. Wipe the oil away from your face with the cloth

If there is still remaining oil on your face, you can use normal face wash to remove the excess. Another handy beauty tip is to use the coconut oil as a hydrating mask.

 

4. Berry lip stain

Lip stains are really useful if you’re attempting a natural appearance through your makeup. The colour is long lasting and subtle. This recipe is particularly special as it incorporates the beautiful colours of your favourite berries, you can add more or less of each berry depending on what colour you are attempting.

Ingredients: 

  • 3 blackberries
  • 1 raspberry
  • 3 pomegranate seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil
  • 5g pot/jar with screw top

Method

  1. Blend the berries in a bowl, using the back of a spoon or mortar and pestle
  2. Extract the juice from the pomegranate and add it directing to the mixture by squeezing seeds with your fingers over the bowl
  3. Add the olive oil to the berry mixture and stir
  4. Pour the mixture into a small portable container of your choice
  5. Brush the mixture onto your lips with a Q-tip, lip brush or fingers.
  6. Brush your lips lightly with a lip balm to soften and extend the life of the colour

As the ingredients are so fresh, the mixture will only last for a couple of days. To prolong the life of the stain, refrigerate the mixture.

 

5. Natural deodorant

Deodorants, like perfumes, can often contain hidden ingredients. Some products can actually increase perspiration and require a more frequent application of deodorant.

Ingredients: 

  • 3 table spoons of coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of shea butter
  • 2 T arrowroot or cornstarch (optional)
  • 10 drops of essential oils for fragrance (optional)

Method: 

  1. Heat the coconut oil and the shea butter over a medium heat until slightly melted.
  2. Remove the mixture from the heat
  3. Add the cornstarch/ arrowroot to and the baking soda to the mixture (if you have chosen not to use arrowroot/ cornstarch add extra baking soda) and mix
  4. Add essential oils
  5. Pour the mixture into a container to store. You may also wish to add the mixture into an old deodorant stick for an easier application

 

6. Salve for cracked heels

This slave is simple remedy to help reduce cracked heels and feet. This slave is best used in conjunction with a foot soak and exfoliation.
Ingredients
  • ¼ cup shea butter
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 3 Tablespoons bees wax
  • ¼ cup magnesium flakes + 2 Tablespoons boiling water
  • 10 drops essential oil
Method:
  1. Boil water and add magnesium flakes until completely dissolved and set aside. This should create a thick mixture
  2. Heat a pan with a small amount of water and place holding the coconut oil, bees wax and shea butter a jar in the centre untill the mixture is melted
  3. remove the jar from the water and set aside to allow the mixture to cool
  4. Place the mixture in a medium bowl or a blender and blend the mixture together
  5. Drop the dissolved magnesium, one drop at a time, into the mixture and continue to blend until the magnesium is completely added
  6. Add the essential oils and mix
  7. Place the mixture in the fridge to cool, once cool if the mixture is not body butter consistency, reblend the mixture
  8. Apply the mixture to cracked heels in thick quantitates and wear socks so the the salve absorbs completely

7. Healing detox spa

Beautiful Way to Relax

This is a perfect way to relax using ingredients sourced from your own cupboard.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups epsom salts
  • 1/2 cup raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup bicarbonate soda
  • 3 drops lavender oil

Method:

  1. Simply mix all of the ingredients into a warm bath, and soak away your pains

 

8. Natural hairspray

It sounds a little alternative, but this is a perfect way to keep your hair in check without any harmful chemicals.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon plain gelatin
  • spray bottle

Method:

  1. Bring the cup of water to the boil, adding the gelatine once it reaches it’s hottest point
  2. Stir gelatine until dissolved
  3. Store mixture in a spray bottle
  4. Place the bottle in a sink of hot water to melt the solution to use the hairspray, as it will solidify as it cool

 

9. Magnesium Foot Scrub

This scrub can be used on your feet as well as your whole body. It is moisturising and nourishing and works wonders on cracked heels when used with a foot slave.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of epsom salts
  • ¼ cup olive oil or almond oil
  • 1 teaspoon liquid soap (optional, makes texture slightly smoother)
  • 10-15 drops of essential oils(or more- optional)
Method
  1. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl
  2. Add the essential oils or other scents to your liking
  3. Store the mixture in an airtight container
  4. Scoop a teaspoon sized amount of mixture to scrub and exfoliate your feet or body when desired
  5. Rise the mixture off  when finished.
