Awesome free things to do in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne

Whether you are a tourist on holidays or just a tourist in your own city, it’s a great idea to get out and about, even if you’re on a budget.

If you haven’t had a chance to explore everything your city has to offer for absolutely nothing, or if you’re just trying to save a few bucks on your travels, there are some great ideas in every major city in Australia.

These aren’t all there is to see and do, but they’re our favourites. Share with us below if you have any other free tip-offs!

SYDNEY

Sydney is our tourist hub but that doesn’t mean you have to pay for the best parts!

  1. Take the Bondi to Coogee Walk – this is one of the most incredible walks along a coastline you could ever hope to do.
  2. Stroll the Sydney Harbour Bridge – nevermind the climb, the view is just as great from down below on the pedestrian pathway.
  3. Take a stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens – these beautiful gardens have it all and it is a great spot for a picnic in a pinch. There are also free tours!
  4. Visit the Art Gallery of NSW – entry is free and the art is exquisite. On Wednesday nights, there are free talks and films too.
  5. Swim at Camp Cove – forget about the huge crowds at Bondi Beach, Camp Cove is where you will find peace and quiet.

Bonus: Check out the markets in Paddington – Sydney’s most famous place to get a bargain.

BRISBANE

Known for its sunny days and easygoing vibe, Brisbane is home to a plethora of free sights.

  1. See the sights at Mt Coot-tha – arguably the best view of Brisbane you can get, Mt Coot-tha is known for its 360-degree views of the city. It’s only 15 minutes from the CBD and is well worth the drive, plus is great for a picnic.
  2. CityHopper along the river – the Brisbane River is famous for a reason, but it doesn’t mean you have to spend the big bucks. The free CityHopper ferry takes you from New Farm to North Quay, seven days a week.
  3. Visit the West End markets – any local will tell you the West End markets are a must-see, and they’re right. Get down to Davies Park on a Saturday to see the arts, culture, fruit, veg and food that makes this market so popular.
  4. Check out the Cultural Precinct in South Bank – don’t worry about walking all over town to see Brisbane’s culture; it’s all in one place in South Bank. Visit the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (or QAGOMA, as they’re known together) and State Library. Of a night, music and free entertainment lights up the river banks.
  5. Take in the local history – the newly refurbished City Hall and Museum of Brisbane are two places to wile away a lazy day in QLD’s capital. City Hall is best explored via a free guided tour. Just be sure you register or arrive early as groups tend to fill up pretty quickly.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne is tres chic and very stylish. It’s also the cool capital of Australia and has an endless supply of things to do.

  1. Queen Victoria Market – this market at the top of the Melbourne CBD is celebrated for its buskers, souvenirs, fresh produce and treats. You have to grab a jam donut too for a few dollars!
  2. Federation Square – there is always something happening at Fed Square. It positively buzzes with a daily program of events, restaurants, cafes and galleries.
  3. City Circle Tram – this is a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne! Hop on and hop off all day and see the sights.
  4. Royal Botanic Gardens – there is a such a greta vibe at the beautiful Melbourne Botanic Gardens. Top it off with the orange and gold trees whose leaves fall in autumn, and it’s one of the most stunning places to visit, free or paid.
  5. State Library – Leaf through books and browse exhibitions in the Domed Reading Room at this grand library. There’s a greta program for both kids and adults.
