20 food storing tips to make your groceries last longer

We’re a savvy lot however sometimes we can buy a bit too much, even if we planned on just getting the basics in our weekly shop.

But no matter how savvy we are with money or our grocery spending, there’s one thing we all get annoyed with: food that doesn’t last!

We have found some awesome tips that will help you save money and your food.

  1. Freeze milk, gravy, stock and bread
  2. Make sour cream and cottage cheese last longer by turning the containers upside down to create a vacuum. This prevents bacteria from growing.
  3. Keep cut cakes fresh by securing slices of bread to the cut sides with toothpicks.
  4. Place fruits in a paper bag to quicken the ripening.
  5. Chop left over onion and freeze in an empty water bottle. Pour out what you need and put the bottle back in the freezer!
  6. If you have leftover Nutella or just little bits, fill the jar with warm milk, shake it and drink. This is a nice little treat for the grandies.
  7. To stop apples browning too quickly when sliced, bind the slices back together with an elastic band.
  8. Preserve fresh herbs with olive oil in the freezer.
  9. Store avocados in the fridge to avoid over-ripening.
  10. Store cucumbers on the counter, not in the fridge, where they risk accelerated decay.
  11. Put your onions in pantyhose to make them last much longer.
  12. Wait before you throw out those eggs – you can test them to see if they’re OK to eat. Place raw eggs in a bowl of cold water to see if they’ve gone bad. If the egg sinks to the bottom, it’s good to eat. If it floats, chuck it.
  13. Don’t sacrifice a bulb of garlic by messing up the cutting of the skin. Remove all cloves from the bulb, then press with the side of a knife (sharp edge away from you) – the skin will fall off.
  14. Make buttermilk with leftover ingredients – add a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to regular milk to make sensational pancakes
  15. Revived melted butter but placing in small bowl, which should be put in a larger bowl with ice.
  16. Stop wasting honey or other sticky ingredients when you measure by coating a measuring cup or spoon with hot water or a dab of cooking oil. The heat or oil will help it slide right off and into a mixing bowl without leaving any behind.
  17. Avoid ruining your cooking by placing a wooden spoon across the top. This will stop overboiling by conducting heat away.
  18. Reheat pizza and other baked goods without drying them out by placing a cup of water in the microwave with them.
  19. Prevent freezer burn by placing a piece of wax paper over ice cream before putting it back in the freezer.
  20. Clean fruit and veggies with bi-carb and water to remove grit, grime, and pesticides.
