The Beatles’ “Let It Be” with this chart-topping hit

In April 1970, “Let It Be” had the highest debut ever on the Billboard top 100 at number six. Shortly afterward, it held the number one spot for several weeks. In fact, the song is ranked number three in the Beatles 100 best songs list!

It was the final song both sung and written by John Lennon before he chose to leave the band.

Paul McCartney said he found inspiration for the ballad after he had a dream about his mother, dismissing rumours the song’s reference to “Mother Mary” was biblical reference. McCartney explained that his mother – who died of cancer when he was 14 – was the inspiration for the “Mother Mary” lyric.

“It was great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream. So that got me writing ‘Let It Be’.” His mother had told him, “It will be all right, just let it be”.

On 13 July 1985, McCartney performed “Let It Be” as one of the closing acts of the Live Aid charity concert in front of an estimated global television audience of over one billion people.

The song has won an Oscar and Grammy for the original song score from its documentary film. Then to top it off, it has a two-time platinum certification!
