This hit is not only one of the most memorable disco hits of all time, it is also a Grammy-award winner. And not just any Grammy award – it was the coveted ‘Best Disco Recording’. But as swiftly as the award category was announced, it was pulled…the 1981 awards did not have an award for the Best Disco recording, and have not since.
It has remained a disco anthem, and made this female American singer a star and gay icon. A song of strength after a breakup, it was no wonder it hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979.
Although it was initially a B-side to a cover version of the Righteous Brothers’ song “Substitute”, this tune could not escape the ears of disc jockeys around the world, who played it on repeat from the end of the 70s, well into the 80s and beyond.
Praised for its clean sound without backing vocals, many have tried to cover it over the years but the original and the best is our favourite.
Can you guess what this song is?
