The Monkees’ 1967 catchy hit single

On this day in 1967, this track by The Monkees soared to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 where it remained for four weeks. It peaked at the fifth position within the UK charts.

The song was originally written by producer and folk musician John Stewart. However, he felt the song was not right for his chosen music field, so allowed this band to release the song under their name and gave Stewart the writing credit. The song skyrocketed the band to stardom. Known for their catchy, upbeat pop-rock songs, the band went on to record another six studio albums.

They have sold more than 75 million records worldwide. Some of their other hits include, “Last Train to Clarksville”, “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, and “I’m a Believer”. In fact, at their peak in 1967, the American pop/rock band outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined!

This song also caught the attention and was later recorded by Anne Murray in 1979. Though her version only reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
