Get Groovin’ to the Young Rascals

In 1967, this song soared to number one on the Billboard music charts and became this band’s signature song.

It was RIAA certified gold in June of the same year, just a month after it hit number one. ‘Groovin” lost its groove for one week when Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ speak a week a number one. Then, ‘Groovin” came back and continued to ride high on the charts.

The song has received a Grammy Hall of Fame award and is commonly used in films today that depict the late 60s.

Initially, the band’s record company Atlantic Records didn’t want to release it but a disc jockey named Murray the K convinced the label that it would definitely be a hit.

Interestingly the band recorded the song in Spanish, French and Italian the next year, giving it worldwide appeal.

The lyrics were so groovy and spoke of a person in love:

Life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly …

Groovin’ … on a Sunday afternoon

Really couldn’t get away too soon 

Some of the most common misheard lyrics ever are in this song, as many people thought the lyrics ‘you and me endlessly’ were instead ‘you and me and Leslie’!

‘Groovin” was subsequently included on the Young Rascals’ album of the same name, but with the alternate harmonica solo.
