Do you like pina coladas?

It was the end of 1979 and this memorable party favourite hit almost missed out on being included in the top songs of that year – thankfully it didn’t!

“Escape (The Pina Colada song) became popular but sales were slow due to the actual title going unnoticed – it was simply called “Escape”. Its repeated mention of pina coladas meant Rupert Holmes had to retitle it to avoid confusion, something he was not happy about.

The lyrics speak of a bored man who sees an ad about a woman who is looking for a man. He writes back and finds out that the woman is actually his wife!

This song also has the unique privilege of being the only song in US history to have the number one position in two decades (December 1979 and January 1980).

It may be a one-hit wonder for this artist but it is still fun to listen to today.

What are your memories of this song?
