Calling all Blondie fans to reminisce one of their classics…

It was this day in 1979 that Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” reached number one across the world, leading to sing-alongs that we still have even today.

The third single from Blondie’s third album, it became Rolling Stone’s number 255 on their list of 500 greatest songs of all time,

It’s also one of the biggest selling singles of all-time with sales of 1.3 million copies!

Singer Debbie Harry said that “‘Heart of Glass’ was one of the first songs Blondie wrote, but it was years before we recorded it properly. They were definitely on to something: it’s been covered multiple times since.

There was a bit of controversy surrounding the song as it has a lyric that says “pain in the ass”, but it didn’t seem to stop radio listeners from requesting it or buying the vinyl.

Debbie Harry told The Guardian, “At first, the song kept saying: ‘Once I had a love, it was a gas. Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass.’ We couldn’t keep saying that, so we came up with: ‘Soon turned out, had a heart of glass.’ We kept one ‘pain in the ass’ in – and the BBC bleeped it out for radio.”
