Ten years since cancer for Kylie

Apr 04, 2015

Kylie Minogue appeared on the Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday night last week and spoke of her upcoming 10 year anniversary of being diagnosed with cancer.  It will be ten years for the star on the 17th May 2015, since the day she was told of her breast cancer.  It was just four days after that she underwent surgery and starts chemotherapy she said.  She was 36 at this time in 2005.

Now 46 years old, she speaks openly about the journey she faced to beat cancer.

“It’s quite difficult to talk about it in interview situations because it’s deep and it’s long and it’s involved and it’s hard to really say what it was in a neat package,” she added. “It’s pretty strange.”

“Cancer has probably touched everyone in this audience in some way or another and all the stories are different, but certainly in as much as she felt it was her duty to talk about it,” she added. “I never questioned – not for a split-second did I think of not saying what I had.”

When talking about her battle with breast cancer, Kylie has previously referred to it as a nuclear bomb, and talked about the important role working played in her recovery.

She explained to You magazine five years ago: “Work was a big part of my recovery. Even when I was going through treatment I was fantasising about the `Showgirl Homecoming’ tour. I had to do it – I don’t know what else I would have done. As I went through the treatment, I would try and concentrate on the future… But I’ll be the one in the old people’s home doing high-kicks in the corner. There is an inherent part of me that says, `This is what I do, this is who I am.’ I just can’t stop – it’s difficult to subdue a performer’s instinct.”

Breast cancer survival rates have over the last ten years improved.  Ten-year age-standardised survival rates for breast cancer in women has increased from 40% during 1971-1972 to a predicted survival of 78% during 2010-2011, according to the cancer research foundation in the UK.

Have you battled breast cancer, or had cancer touch your life?
