Revamped 1971 Coke ad shows the effects of fizzy drinks on our health

Coca Cola was around long before we were born and was the signature drink of our youth. Everyone loved the smooth contours of the iconic Coke bottle and they loved the refreshing taste.

But this was in an era where smoking was considered good for you, and we turned out to be wrong. Now we know just how bad fizzy drinks can be for your health, not to mention your teeth and overall wellbeing.

That, however, was not reflected in the infamous 1971 ‘Hilltop’ Coca Cola commercial where singers from all corner of the earth sang about wanting to buy everyone in the world a Coke.

Fast forward 44 years and we are much better educated on the health risks of sugary drinks, so one US public health organisation decided to spread a new message by recruiting real people to tell the effects Coke has had on them.

In the video below, there are people who are suffering from diabetes, tooth decay, weight gain, and other diseases that have been associated with sugary drinks and soda – something nowhere to be seen in the 70s ads.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest hopes that the video’s message will help to reduce the impacts of fizzy drinks not just in America but around the world as Coca Cola is sold in nearly every single country.

In a statement, CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson, said: ‘For decades, Coca-Cola and other big soda companies have spent billions of dollars trying to convince Americans and citizens around the world that soda equals happiness.
‘They have used the most sophisticated and manipulative advertising techniques to convince children and adults alike that a disease-promoting drink will make them feel warm and fuzzy inside.

‘It’s a multi-billion-dollar brainwashing campaign designed to distract us away from our diabetes with happy thoughts”, he said, reports the Daily Mail.

The lyrics in the new video send a much darker message than the original video, saying, “I’d like to teach the world about what sugar did to me. Liquid calories gave me diabetes which really ain’t so sweet”.
