Reporter claims Donald Trump pursued Diana for “trophy wife”

A TV presenter in the UK says Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump lavished unwanted attention on Lady Diana after her marriage to Prince Charles broke down.

Selina Scott wrote in the Sunday Times, “He bombarded Diana at Kensington Palace with massive bouquets of flowers, each worth hundreds of pounds.”

“Trump clearly saw Diana as the ultimate trophy wife.”

When questioned by the newspaper, a spokesman for Mr Trump said, “They had a great relationship, liked each other a lot, but nothing ever came of it.”

However, Ms Scott claims that Trump was infatuated with Lady Di, and that the attention was unwelcome.

She says Diana confided in her and that she was increasingly concerned as flowers sent by the tycoon piled up in her apartment.

Ms Scott recalls Lady Di saying, “‘What am I going to do? He gives me the creeps,” to which Scott replied “Just throw them in the bin.”

“Diana laughed,” she said.

The journalist also claims in the article that when Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Trump told friends his biggest regret was that they hadn’t dated.

“He said that he always thought he had a chance of romance and would have had a ‘shot’ with her.”

If what Ms Scott says is true, Donald Trump would still have been married to Marla Maples, his second wife, from whom he divorced in 1999.

While it’s feasible The Donald (as first wife Ivana once called him) had his eye on the former princess, and he certainly has a way about him, there is a shadow of doubt over the claims due to the ongoing feud between Trump and Ms Scott that has raged since the mid-90s.

If, and that is a very large if, but IF Diana had fallen for The Donald’s charms, we might have seen him alongside Di at William and Catherine’s wedding, peering into baby Charlotte’s cot at the christening… what a thought.

What do you make of these claims? Would Donald Trump have been a disastrous addition to the extended royal family or do you think he would he have been an entertaining and quirky addendum?
