Princess Mary shows Europe’s new royals how it’s done

When Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip married Sofia Hellqvist at Stockholm’s Royal Palace on Saturday, it was all pomp and ceremony but not without controversy.

The new Princess Sofia of Sweden has been a “glamour model”, has two tattoos and a topless photo shoot to her credit, and once appeared on a reality TV show in which she kissed 41-year-old American porn star Jenna Jameson.

When the Prince and Princess first stared dating in 2010, the Swedish Royal Family were not amused (or whatever the Swedish equivalent is). Some say Carl Philip’s mother Queen Silvia actively conspired against the young woman destined to become Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland.

The prince is third in line to the Swedish throne after his sister Crown Princess Victoria and her three-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle.

There were no signs of the bride’s body ink on the day, although the groom could have done with a shave. But it was all smiles as the stunning couple wed on Saturday, with the newlyweds grinning at each other and the crowd, barely able to contain their happiness as they rode away in their black and silver carriage.

At least Our Mary knows how to behave like a royal. Joining Crown Prince Frederic in wearing the traditional blue and yellow sash representing Denmark, the Crown Princess showed off her trademark style, wearing a lavender silk gown, tasteful tiara and her winning Aussie smile.

Mary was at ease among the who’s who of European royalty, including Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex; and Queen Sonja of Norway.

As always, the Crown Prince looked pleased as punch to have his elegant wife on his arm as he lead her along the red carpet.

Beards, tattoos, poking their tongues out… do Europe’s royals have more fun that the Windsors or have standards slipped? Let us know what you think!
