It’s been merely a week since Leonardo Dicaprio won his first Oscar, but now it’s his mother Irmelin whose in the spotlight.

A flashback photo of the actor and his parents from 1976 has been drawing a lot less ‘aww’s than ‘eww’s. So what are people so up in arms about? Well, Leo’s mum’s underarm hair.

Apparently not many people on the internet remember the 70s, but baby boomers can easily look at photos of that time and spot a number of hairy pits among themselves, and friends, without seeing the big deal.

After the photo was shared on ‘History in Pictures’ last week, it has had 13,000 shares and over 7,000 comments, most of which are aimed at whether or not Irmelin shaved her underarms and not how proud his parents must be and how far he’s come.

One commenter hit back at critics, saying “Why does his mom have to shave? All women grow hair under their arms. This was a different time. This was normal. And women STILL DONT have to shave to appease you! She’s not gross, only your irrelevant opinion is.”

Leonardo has previously revealed his hippy upbringing and how he was raised in communes.

My dad always told me, ‘Go out there, son, and whatever you do, I don’t care if you’re successful or not, just have an interesting life,’ ” Leonardo recently told Parade.

Leo credits his mother particularly for her endless dedication to getting him to and from auditions and school so he could achieve what he has. And her armpits had nothing to do with it!

Take a look at the photo and tell us, do you think Irmelin’s armpits are a big deal? Did you do the same back in the 70s?

  1. Omg, some people make me so mad. How is it anyone’s business if she shaved under her arms or not. It was her decision to make. Isn’t the fact that she is a loving, caring & devoted mother more important. Take a good look in the mirror , especially at your small mind, before judging & critising someone else.

  2. In the 50-60,s people hardly ever shaved their arm pits ,,came later on when Veet came out etc ,,other wise was just normal ,,

  3. Most Australian women did shave their armpits. Most European women did not. We were told that the European men found women’s underarm hair sexy!!!!

    • Kept the European women’s armpits warm in winter where temperatures can be 10 degrees below zero. Speaking of below…well that’s another story.

  4. I have a friend, she is European and she is a bit of a hippie. She does not shave her underarm but she looks clean, tidy and gorgeous and no one sees it. She is the most intelligent, smart and honest friend . She is an artist with a brilliant mind. She does not shave her underarm who cares.!!!! Really. Please let us not judge a person on the outside. Don’t be hypocrite.

  5. Whilst I, like pretty much all my contemporaries, was influenced by the fashions in dress, opinion and philosophy promulgated by the hippies, I must say I never did like hairy arm pits. Luckily for me, having been a natural blonde with sparse body hair, it was not a worry for me. I certainly would have taken measures to prevent a bush in my arm pits had been dark-haired and/or a more hirsute type. Having said that, it is not my business, now or then, what other women choose to do with their body hair.

  6. Like her, I was a hippie but blonde, so armpit hair didn’t show much. I only started shaving as it does help prevent BO and after years of shaving it no longer grows any more. It was acceptable in the 60s and 70s but not really appreciated!

  7. Well, that’s life as we know it gone! Seriously, it’s a personal choice, Leo’s mum is lovely, let it go

    • Oh, Sally and the girls above were having such a lovely chat about it…come on…don’t be a party pooper.

  8. How dare people criticize what this woman did so many years ago. It was hardly a crime.

  9. This story is irrelevant and none sense. Can’t believe Over 60 lowered their standards to print it! Disappointed.

  10. Really? Who cares? I shaved for my own comfort but at the ripe old age I am at, I do not any longer. Cannot believe the fuss this has caused in this so called age of equality

  11. Leave the woman alone, & people should get a life!!!!

  12. It is the beauty fashionistas that encouraged women that to be attractive to men you had to shave under the arms,do your legs, bikini line and don’t forget the Brazilian (ouch) just so you could wear g-strings.
Why should there be a discussion anywhere on whether someone should conform to what some people consider as “Normal” Aren’t there more important things in the world than body hair.
