Getting out and about – Top entertainment ideas

Mar 16, 2013

We asked 8 over 60s for their favourite entertainment ideas and activities this week.  It might inspire you to find some interesting things outside your everyday activities.

Jan, 67 said she looks forward to Gympie Muster, and the Tamworth Country Music Festival at the Golden Guitar, two big country music festivals held each year.  “We tow our caravan and stay in the designated camping areas, going with a few friends each time.  The group is getting bigger and bigger every time we go”

Jeffrey, 60, goes to rock and roll lessons on a Thursday and Friday night, and trips off to the Wintersun festival at the Gold Coast each year.   “I’m single so I find the dance lessons a fun thing to do, and a good place to meet others my own age, especially the ladies.”  (he said with a wink).

Dan, 71,  heads out fishing in the mornings for some solitude in hope of catching his evening meal.  He has been known to spend more than 3 hours on the beach, peacefully casting his line in search of tailor and bream.  “It’s my favourite thing to do”.

Lisa, 63 suggested we check out the wine and food festivals in our local area.  She tries to go to two or three a year, with her favourite being the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.  “Most capital cities have them, and many regional areas too.  The Noosa food and wine festival and the Caxton Street Seafood and Wine Festival are two I really like.  The Caxton St Festival is coming up in May”.

Margaret, 63 and her husband pack their green bags and go off to the organic and fresh food markets, on Saturday or Sunday mornings enjoying breakfast and picking up their fresh food for the week.  In Sydney there is a whole lot of different markets.  Find some here.

Gill, 62 said she loves to go to the RSL near her house for dinner.  “I know it is very stereotypical, and some will frown at me, but it’s cheap, we can play the pokies for a few hours without spending much money, and there is free entertainment and dancing.”

Ben, 61 and three of his friends meet to go cycling around the city loop on Sunday mornings, stopping for a coffee and big breakfast at the end.  “It is something we have been doing for 3 years, since one of our friends retired and moved to the coast near the rest of us.  He was really the one who got us all going.”

And finally, Gladice takes time out to go to the movies at least monthly, and gets a discount using her seniors card making it an inexpensive thing to do.  “I went to the Event Cinemas page via the Seniors Club Online website and signed up.  Now I get $8 movies every time I go to an event cinema”.
