First pics of the actors playing the Queen and Prince Philip in new TV series ‘The Crown’!

The Queen and Prince Philip’s has captured the imagination of monarchists around the world a number of times before in the form of movies and books, but now it’s being turned into a television series due to air in 2016, starring some of Britain’s most promising young actors.

Keen royal watchers were quick to discover the filming locations of ‘The Crown’, which is set to be the most expensive in history. Specially created for streaming network Netflix, the drama will centre around Queen Elizabeth II and British prime ministers throughout several decades, over 10-episodes.

According to Variety, The Crown will detail the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century in two of the world’s most recognised addresses: Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street.

Season one will begin with Elizabeth as a 25-year-old princess at the beginning of her reign, and struggling to form a relationship with then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

“‘The Crown’ is storytelling that lives somewhere between television and cinema from Britain’s foremost chroniclers of modern politics, class and society,” said Cindy Holland, VP of original content at Netflix.

If you love Doctor Who, you’ll recognise the actor playing Prince Philip – it’s Matt Smith, who has played the Doctor in previous series. The Queen will be played by young actress Claire Foy, who looks every bit the royal in the first pics of filming.

The pair were spotted filming at London’s Lyceum Theatre on Saturday night, reports the Daily Mail. It looks like they’ll be filming for a while yet as each episode will be one hour in length.
