Dame Julie Andrews to direct My Fair Lady in Sydney

In some wonderful entertainment news this morning, it has been announced that Dame Julie Andrews will be directing My Fair Lady when it comes to Australia in 2016.

The actress and singer has been gracing our screens for decades, but now she will be doing behind the scenes to direct one of the most popular musicals of all time, rivalled perhaps only by her own Sound of Music.

A brand new production of Lerner and Loewe’s masterpiece My Fair Lady will be performed the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House in 2016, in celebration of the iconic musical’s 60th anniversary.

Alongside Julie Andrews will be Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, The King and I, South Pacific) as they help to create a powerful rendition for Sydney audiences.

It will be incredible to see “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?”, “On The Street Where You Live”, “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Get Me to the Church on Time” knowing one of the world’s best actresses is at the helm.

Producer Lyndon Terracini said in a statement, “I can’t think of a more fitting musical to present with John Frost in Opera Australia’s 60th birthday year. I am delighted and it is indeed a privilege to work with Dame Julie Andrews as she creates a new My Fair Lady that will capture the magic of the world’s greatest musical for a new generation of classic musical lovers”.

On her appointment as Director, Dame Julie Andrews, said, “I am thrilled to have been asked to direct My Fair Lady at the Sydney Opera House in August 2016. I look forward to coming to Sydney this November to cast the production and begin the process of bringing this great musical to life once again”.

More information about solid dates will be revealed in the coming months.
