Australia’s best album for 2014…. 7

Music in 2014 may seem foreign to you with the advent of pop and electronica but it’s interesting to find out what our number one album in Australia was this year….INXS’s The Very Best.

And it’s not a new album with new songs either – it was released in 2011 and features a collection of songs dating back to the 80s. It goes to show our country still has nostalgia for the rock group, no doubt reignited after the success of miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart.

Other albums for the year have not yet been released but the current ARIA top 10 albums for this week are below:

  1. Taylor Swift – 1989
  2. The Veronicas – The Veronicas
  3. One Direction – Four
  4. Ed Sheeran – x
  5. Dean Ray – Dean Ray
  6. Guy Sebastian – Madness
  7. Nickelback – No Fixed Address
  8. Foo Fighters – Sonic Fighters
  9. Human Nature – Jukebox
  10. Michael Buble – Christmas

Barbra Streisand’s Partners is currently at #20 and INXS’s The Very Best is #30.

The Very Best spent seven weeks at number one in 2014 and was just awarded quadruple platinum – making it the best-selling album by an Australian band in six years.

Tim Farriss told SMH, “It’s wonderful we are so popular in 2014, to so many young people…Michael [Hutchence] always said as long as we mattered, that’s what mattered to him”.

What do you think about INXS’s second coming? Do you love them or loathe them? What was your favourite album this year?

  1. I don’t think I fully appreciated INXS at the time. Liked a couple of their songs & that was it. Now I have a greater appreciation of their music & Michael’s sex appeal. He had that edge & certain something!!!!

  2. INXS, love them, Barbra Streisand, love her, Taylor Swift my granddaughters just love her, I took my granddaughter to her concert earlier this year & it was fantastic, she’s a great roll model for young girls, I gave my granddaughter a guitar for her birthday because she wants to play like Taylor & has been having lessons for some time now just LOVES it & is getting very good at it.

  3. The only Australian albums I have are mainly LRB with one Skyhooks and one Bushwackers. I never realised this until someone pointed it out while looking through my collection of vinyl and CD’s. Has anyone noticed that rock started around 1955 and except for Cliff Richard ( not that you buy his records) there was virtually no British rock bands worth listening to , or indeed did any exist at all? , until the Beatles in 1964.
