Next in line to the throne is Prince Charles, however if Australia’s had any say in it, that would not be the case.

Queen Elizabeth is 90 this year, and more and more discussion has centred on who will take over the throne and whether Prince Charles will offer it to his first son, Prince William, who is second in line to the throne.

In a Women’s Weekly poll released ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday next week, only a quarter of Australians want to see Prince Charles as our next monarch, compared to 49 per cent who prefer┬áhis 33-year-old son.

“From our survey, the Queen’s popularity is certainly in no doubt,” the magazine’s acting editor-in-chief Juliet Rieden said.

“The results are rough on Charles, who has a deep-seated personal relationship with Australia, but his image has never fully recovered from the tragic death of Diana”.

Despite the backlash, Prince Charles had a successful visit to Australia (and New Zealand) last year and many turned out to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.

Interestingly, the poll found that even two-year-old Prince George was more popular than Prince Charles among Australians when asked who they’d like to sit on the throne next. Of course George is only 2 but that doesn’t seem to matter.

The poll also asked Australians about becoming a republic, with 35 per cent of us in favour of the decision.

Tell us, would you want Prince Charles to become the King? Who would you prefer instead?

  1. Sally

No. William is a much better choice

    • Moira

Prince William would be a more popular choice but I don’t see him taking his father’s place. I don’t care for Camilla but she wouldn’t be called Queen would she?

  2. Kate

No I don’t want Charles and Camilla . They have destroyed any chances of that after what they did to Princes Diana. William is a better choice he is more in the public eye these days

  3. Kerrie McNamara

I really don’t care about who is king of England, as long as Australia is a republic.

    • Michele

And what benefit will it be to Australia to become a republic? Have you considered how much the change over would cost ?

  4. Marna smith

So now the Womens Weekly is the epitome of people’s choice – I don’t read the rubbish magazine – so people like me who like Charles don’t get a say?

    • Lynne Highfield

I agree with you Marna. The Weekly is not adverse to printing what it wants to print regardless of any facts presented to it. As to being a republic, the thought of Oz turning into a circus as is being done in the USA, I say, if our system ain’t broke…don’t fix it. It really doesn’t matter to us who is king as it is in name only and Charles is not unintelligent tho’ it must be agreed he is less attractive than his son. And, unfortunately, attractiveness is apparently of major importance to our community….as depicted by Mal and Bill, Diana and Camilla…..!!

  5. Terry Nesbitt-Foster

It’s the Queen people admire, not Royalty.

  6. Guy Hartcher

Charles has earned his turn with 40 years of apprenticeship!

    • Paula Woodley

Totally agree, Prince Charles is earning his kingship. Right from a young boy he has been taught about being a Constitutional Monarch. His failed marriage was not all one sided, it takes 2 to tango, rarely is it one sided. DIANA grew up alongside the Royal Family and her sister turned him down as she realised she could not live up to the job. The Spencer Family have been trying since the 1700’s to marry into the family and her grandmother and his were determined to pul it off. I for one am so pleased to see him so happy with his 2nd wife, and when he does come to the throne the Duchess will be a Consort as she was not born to the purple. God Bless the Prince of Wales and William, learn from your father.

Why even have this as a discussion it should be Charles that the way it works !! Why in the hell would you want a republic ??
Why change something that works ?? Would you like someone like Rudd?? Full of self interest ego and after power.
With the royal family at least it’s consistent and you can get any power hungry pollies trying to take over.
Worked for few hundred years leave alone.

So – Womens Weekly readers are now the new experts on what the rest of us want??? I don’t think so!
A genuine poll has nothing to do with a crappy Womens Mag with its dumb and dumber readers – I gave up reading mags years ago when I realised the lack of integrity in how they get their stories, and how they contribute to whipping the paparazzi into a frenzy so that there is no fair opinion.

  9. Cheryl

Prince William. Bonnie Prince Charlie has had his chance and he blew it. Enough said.

    • Linda

I am with you Cheryl no way for Prince Charles he stuffed it for himself . William and Kate deserve to be King and Queen they are for the people and family takes pride of place with them .

  10. Joy Anne Bourke

NO TO CHARLES AND CAMILLA. THEY DID THEIR DAMAGE WHEN CHARLES WAS MARRIED TO DIANA. AFTER THAT I HAD NO RESPECT FOR CHARLES AND EVEN LESS FOR CAMILLA AS SHE WAS THE 3RD PERSON IN THE MARRIAGE.
WILLIAM SHOULD BE THE NEXT KING AND KATE – THEY ARE THE FUTURE OF THE ROYAL FAMILY.

  11. Peter

I cannot stand the pompous banality of englands so called “royals”. Who cares what they do at the expense of the english people. It has no relevance to modern Australia.
