What’s your favourite Christmas carol?

There’s nothing like a little carol singing to get you in the mood for Christmas.

From the classics, such as ‘Silent Night’ and ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ to more modern hits, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’, there are plenty of great tunes to hum along to while decorating the tree or sipping on eggnog.

Christmas carols originated in Europe thousands of years ago when they were sung by pagans during the winter solstice.

One of the earliest records of Christmas carols was made in 129AD, when a Roman Bishop said that a song called ‘Angel’s Hymn’ should be sung in honour of the Jesus’ birth.

But it wasn’t until about 336AD when Pope Julius I declared the birth of Christ should be celebrated on 25 December that Christmas really began to take hold.

Nowadays, Christmas is celebrated by millions of people around the world every year with each family forging their own special traditions and customs for the big day.

While some people are prone to rolling their eyes when carols start ringing out through department stores and supermarkets in the middle of November, there really is nothing quite as special as coming together over a beautiful carol.
