What Pisses Me Off: People who hit and run

What pisses me off? People who aren’t honest when they hit another car. Just last night I was at my local Coles and had just finished shopping when I went down to my car.

A young girl was standing just next to my car, talking to a dishevelled looking man. I stood there quietly, trying not to interrupt why I attempted to get into my car. They weren’t moving so I listened in. It appeared that the man had hit this young girl’s car and left a huge dent in the side. He swore blind he didn’t do it, when it was very clear he had – his bull bar on his large truck was the exact height of the large gash – yet he denied it profusely.

“I would’ve known if I hit ya car!”, he exclaimed. The girl was visibly upset at the state of her now-destroyed car. I couldn’t believe his gall, it was just so obvious he had done it. She said that he knew he’d hit the car because when he did it, he stopped, reversed, and tried to park again. Still, he denied it. A businessman came up and said he had seen the incident and he had heard a loud scraping sound. Again, “I didn’t do it, the dent was on your car before you got here”.

Why should this young girl be responsible for something she had no part in? I didn’t stick around to see the conclusion of this but I was appalled at his sheer lack of care for what he had done. The arrogance of him! Mind you, this Coles carpark was in quite an affluent area and this man was clearly not from around there – he simply didn’t want to foot the bill for hitting an expensive car! I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t have insurance but that isn’t the point. It isn’t the girl’s fault he didn’t have insurance, it’s his! You can’t just go around hitting people’s cars without so much as an admittance of guilt! So nasty and not right.

A few months ago, I was trying to sell my car. I had it polished and cleaned inside and out – it was going to sell quickly in this condition. I went to the shops and when I came back to my car, a note was on the windscreen. Thinking it was a flyer, I opened it up quickly, about to throw it out, before realising it was a note. “We just witnessed a girl hit your car. Her registration is 123 ABC and we tried to get her to leave a note and we think she looked a bit dodgy so we wrote this. Our number is XXX if you need us for any reason”. There are good people in this world! It was so nice of them to do that, but it still didn’t change that I had a bloody big scrape down the side of my car and my hub cap was broken off. I promptly rang the nice people who saw it happen and they said the girl looked very unkempt and her car was even worse. I dropped into my local police station and they called the girl, using her rego. The girl profusely denied any involvement and I was left to pay the insurance bill! $300 excess, thank you very much. I couldn’t believe it.

Are we turning into a world of ignorant, careless people? You should own up to a mistake and deal with the consequences.
