Losing a loved one is heartbreaking, especially if it’s your spouse. But one woman ensured her humour continued long after her death.
Phedre Fitton asked her loving husband to water her plants for her after she passed away and he happily obliged for several years – completely unaware they were actually plastic. The cheeky mum had planned the prank for when she was gone and it fooled her whole family.
According to Indy 100, she sadly died aged 69 after battling cancer for five years. The couple’s daughter, Antonia Nicol, shared the heart-warming story on social media, after her father finally uncovered the hilarious prank “years later”.
She wrote on Twitter: “Before my mum passed away, she gave my dad strict instructions to water the plants in the bathroom. He’s been religiously watering them and keeping them alive. They look so amazing he decided to take them to his new home, only to discover they are plastic! Can hear my mum chuckling.”

The post has received thousands of comments and shares from people overwhelmed by the story, and sharing their love for Fitton’s humour.
“She’d fought cancer for five years but it beat her in the end in November 2013. My parents live in South Africa whilst I live here, so it was a very difficult time for us all,” Nicol told Indy 100. She said they whole family found it hilarious when they discovered the truth and made them feel like Phedre was still with them.

Another photo shows her father re-enacting watering the plants, clearly sharing his late wife’s love of humour. Nicol later took to Twitter to say both she and her dad were overwhelmed by the loving response they had received by people online.
Commenting on the initial post, one Twitter user wrote: “Your mum sounds awesome! I bet she did have a laugh to herself about this! I know I did! Sounds like true love. I’m so sorry for your loss and for the not needed cruel comments on here x,” while another added: “Fantastic. Your mum sounds hilarious.”
When another fan wrote: “OMG! What a legend! Sorry to hear of your loss <3,” Nicol replied: “Thank you. She was an absolute legend for sure. My parents fell in love when they were 16 years old and she died aged 69. She had to give my dad something to do.”
