Popular Top Gear host Richard Hammond has been injured in a motorbike crash while filming in Africa.

Hammond was on location with his co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and James May when he came off his bike and hit his head, The Sun reports.

Hammond was reportedly unconscious when medics reached him laying on the side of the road. It is not known whether or not he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crew was said to horrified when he flew off the bike, mindful of the fact Hammond has previously been injured during filming.

He was badly hurt in a 463km/h collision in 2006 while filming Top Gear and was in a coma for two weeks.

Clarkson indicated to The Sun that Hammond did not require hospital treatment following his most recent accident, saying: “We don’t do hospitals.”

The famous trio flew to Mozambique two weeks ago for their new show The Grand Tour.

The team often carries out dangerous stunts, racing each other and testing new equipment. Following his 2006 crash, Hammond revealed he was badly shaken by the ordeal and suffered depression, paranoia and memory loss due to brain damage.
