Sylvia Jeffreys has spoken out about her troubles with fame

Sylvia Jeffreys has opened up about the effect her sudden launch to fame has had on her since starting her TV career as a Today newsreader, and dating and subsequently marrying Peter Stefanovic.

Sylvia spoke to Rachel Corbett on the You’ve Gotta Start Somewhere podcast recently, saying that “for whatever reason there is quite a bit of interest in breakfast television and the people who front it.”

Taking over from the ever-popular Georgie Gardner as Today’s newsreader in 2014, Sylvia found herself suddenly launched into the public eye. The media interest escalated dramatically when she began a relationship with journalist, Peter Stefanovic.

“We went from being nobodies to having photographers follow us around the place which was pretty bizarre”, she said.

When the couple married in Kangaroo Valley earlier this month, the happy day was marred by overzealous paparazzi, with a helicopter circling above during their vows, and one particularly eager photographer even crashing his car into a dam in the frenzy.

The morning television star at the time called out the unfortunate pap on her Instagram page, captioning a photo of the waterlogged car, “Shout out to the determined pap who was this keen to crash our wedding (no pun intended). Not sure how you managed to drive into a dam … but hope you’ve dried out.”

While it has been a challenging adjustment, Sylvia says she certainly has no regrets from taking the job that catapulted her to fame.

“It’s a job that I thought I’d be lucky to get in another 10 or 20 years time, so I was thrilled and excited and extremely grateful,” she said, “but just adjusting to that new level of attention was certainly a challenge”.
