Selfless young man adopts his elderly neighbour

The two neighbours are best friends.

If there was ever a story to remind you about all the good there is in the world, it’s this.

American man Chris Salvatore has come to the rescue of his elderly neighbour Norma Cook by asking her to move in with him so he could care for her.

The pair had been living across the hall from each other in an apartment complex for years and became firm friends after Norma invited him over one day for a chat and a glass of her favourite drink, champagne.

Norma was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and was struggling to look after herself due to her ailing health.

On top of that, because of America’s health system, she couldn’t afford treatment or the fees to move into a full-time care facility.

That’s when Chris decided to invite Norma to live with him so he could take care of her.

Chris says he loves hanging out with her because of her wicked sense of humour and her love for life.

Instead of going out and partying with his friends all night, he spends his time with Norma talking, laughing or going out for dinner.

The pair are quite the match! In a world where most people don’t even know their neighbours name anymore it’s wonderful to see such a selfless act of kindness – especially between young and old.

“She couldn’t be happier that I asked [her to move in],” he told Today. “I was over there visiting most days anyway.

“The only other option was for her to go into a facility,” he continued. “I just couldn’t do that to someone who is like my own grandmother.”

Since Norma doesn’t have children or any close family living near by, she is going to stay with Chris for as long as she can and they both seemed thrilled about it.

It just goes to show that when it comes to friendship, anything is possible.

Do you know your neighbours? Are you glad to see such lovely acts of kindness still exist?
