As future king, Prince William is often reserved and respectful in public, minding his manners and smiling politely, but behind closed doors it seems the prince has a cheeky sense of humour.
Music legend Sir Rod Stewart, 73, recently recalled a funny exchange he shared with the 36-year-old royal when he was knighted in 2016 – and it left the musician having to think up a swift response on his feet.
The pair met in rehearsals ahead of the official ceremony and, speaking in a clip from Channel 9’s 60 Minutes, Rod mimicked the royal’s posh accent as he recalled: “He [William] did say to me, ‘Still singing are you Rod’? I said, ‘Yes, I have eight children, I have to’!”
While Rod was supported on the day by wife Penny Lancaster and two of his sons, he admitted: “I wish my mum and dad could have been alive to see it…” Asked what they would have thought, he joked: “Oof, our Roddie a knight! From the council house to Buckingham Palace!”
It’s not the first time the musician and Prince William have met. The prince was previously pictured with his brother Harry and Harry’s former girlfriend Chelsy Davy in 2007 as they cheered on the singer during a concert dedicated to the memory of the boys’ late mother, Princess Diana.
Elsewhere in the TV chat, Rod revealed the first of his friends to congratulate him on his knighthood was Elton John – and it happened over a very memorable phone call.
“He said, ‘a couple of old tarts from London have become knights’, which was wonderful,” the singer recalled. Asked how he would describe his long friendship with Elton, Rod joked they were like a couple “in the throes of divorce”.
While the pair are known for their small spats, Rod insisted Elton is a “dear friend” and “the most generous person I know”.
As the show’s host expressed surprise that they have never performed or toured together, Rod admitted he was surprised too – before joking of his friend: “Too late now, she’s retiring!”
Elton announced a few months ago that he would be embarking on a farewell tour, before stepping back from his travels and overseas concert tours in future.
